Awesome, awesome or what once again, welcome everyone. If you're just joining in just a few seconds ago, I introduced myself like once again, my name is Sarah Burnett. I am one of the admission counselors here in the office.
Today's session is part of our larger series of Tiger tips, and so if you've been joining and following us along, this is actually the ninth session. But if this is your first introduction to tiger tips, Tiger tips is essentially just kind of our campaign and guides to our perspective. Students who were starting that college search process and so at the beginning, we try to kind of give you a little bit of preliminary information on how to research colleges, how to find that one the right fit for you, and slowly get a little bit more and more.
In depth, I'm still looking at the common data and then looking at different essay prompts. Most recently we talked about the athletic recruitment process. We also talked about testing within the admissions process and the different types of tests that you may encounter, and so this as we kind of start to enter that tail end of the phase of our campaign. Still kind of going more and more in depth. So really looking at financial aid and kind of starting with the basics of.
What does it mean to have need based aid versus merit aid and how do you start that process? Both at Swanee but also on the broader spectrum of, you know, just entering into the financial aid process and so as a great introduction and someone to give insight into that, we have our associating of admission for financial aid. Beth Crager to kind of walk us through that process just to kind of give some housekeeping things really, really quickly. If you have been introducing yourself in the chat.
You've already found that chat box. One thing that you may have noticed is that there your chat doesn't pop up immediately. We do use a moderated chat, so I'll be behind the scenes as Beth is presenting.
Managing that chat in, responding to your questions, definitely feel free to offer questions throughout, but we will have some dedicated time at the end to also go through some questions and then also, if you're having any type of sound problems or video problems, just feel free to refresh the page. That usually tends to work pretty well within this platform. I know it looks slightly different than zoom or Google Hangouts, but he found that chat box you know and you can see us and you can hear us.
Then you have the basics all ready to go, but with all of that I will go ahead and turn it over to Beth and let her introduce herself. And then we can go ahead and get started.

Thank you, Shiro
Awesome, so thank you so much Beth. For all that information. And yes, so if you guys haven't submitted a question already, definitely feel free to use that chat box on the right hand corner, but we can go in and start to go through some of the questions that we have received thus far. Going back to the CSS profile. I know we briefly talked about how the CSS.
Kalu
02:36:47 PM
Please can we request for a CSS profile fee waiver now before the application for the CSS profile opens in October?
Ravel automatically consider students for a few waivers based on the data that's put into it. But someone is asking a question if they are allowed to apply for a fee waiver prior to submitting the CSS profile. So is there any way they can get some type of input before?
Gotcha and then still speaking on CSS profile. What documents should families have on hand as they start that process?
Kerese
02:37:20 PM
Hello, what are the documents that are usually needed for the CSS Profile?
Allison
02:39:23 PM
On your website, you mention Raiseme.com as a source for microscholarships. Could you explain what that is? Thanks!
Someone's asking about raise me. So can you explain that process and how students get micro scholarships but and also how much of that can be applied to their spawning bill?
Sara
02:39:38 PM
Is it possible to apply to both the FAFSA and CSS Profile?
Shiro Burnette
02:40:38 PM
Hi Sara, yes both the FAFSA and CSS profile are required for need-based aid at Sewanee. If you are an international student then you only submit the CSS Profile.
Thank you, I'm so going to another one. I'm just going to read it should both parents when married create a fasfa and CSS profiles or just the head of household who intends to use their financial details to fill out these forms?
Daphne
02:41:23 PM
Should both parents (when married) create FAFSA and CSS profiles or just the head of the household who intends to use their financial details to fill the form?
Search into work study. I'm at a couple questions about that. Just in general, do they have to fill out a separate application for work study and then once selected for work study like if they get approved for work study, do they apply? And how do they apply for work study positions?
Abdi
02:42:22 PM
For the work study, do I have to apply for it prior starting to go to college or how does this work?
So this is just a quick clarifying question, so both students and parents each have their own individual.
Bridger
02:44:43 PM
Kid and parent will have fsa Id?
Awesome and then this one is a little bit larger. I'm going to try to get multiple questions within one, but some students are asking.
But they need to have a separate application for merit scholarships and being on the admission side, I can go ahead and answer that for you guys. Your regular common application that serves as your application for merit scholarships. So the information that you include in terms of your TPA, your Tran Scripps if you decide to send a test score essay, all of it holistically. That's what we look at for your merit scholarships, but a lot of students are.
Also asking about what different pieces do they need as international students. So like the CSS profile in addition to that, what do they need in terms of like the proof of finances and what do they submit for that for the international side?
Nelly
02:45:51 PM
i have sent my application yesterday do i need to send a different appllicarion for schorlarship. As an internatiomal student do i need to have an fafsa Application
Giuliana
02:45:57 PM
How do you verify the financial information of international students? If for example our parents do NOT fill in taxes. Do you need any special statement or something?
Yeah, and so yeah, if you haven't and I'll put his email address in the chat so international students, if you haven't already, definitely reach out to Tim Neil. I'm like Beth said he works with all of our international students in the pool. His email address is justtim.neil@swanee.edu, but like I said I'll put all of that in the chat.
I'll also hyperlink on our website. We have a page dedicated to international student aid, so all of those steps that you guys have to go to on your side and this slightly different nuances.
Correct, correct? I can also put that in the chat in just a second.
So another question was, are 529 plans included within the FASFA, and if so, how does that impact the families FC?
Ian
02:47:32 PM
Are 529 plans included as part of the FAFSA process. If so, does it impact the EFC?
Shiro Burnette
02:48:24 PM
International Aid Guidelines: https://new.sewanee.edu/admission-aid/application-process/application-review/international-applicant/international-aid/
Awesome, so also combining more questions multiple questions into one. Does the application cycle.
Get a student select have any impact on how their need based materials are evaluated or reviewed. Anything like that.
Hadley
02:49:49 PM
Is financial aid in the case of ED also need-based?
Uh, another question was on the fast full form. How does it work with submitting schools and is it just a general form or do they need to select all dispose that they hope to attempt?
Elise
02:50:53 PM
on the FAFSA form do you fill it out with the school you plan to attend or do you fill it out in general?
No, you're cut, let's see.
So there's a couple about merit based applications and whether the decision deadline makes an impact. Just as Beth was describing on the need based side on the merit, same exact thing, there's not necessarily a difference of whether you're applying early decision early action. The biggest thing is just making sure that you guys submit it on time.
What types of loans are available to international students?
Kseniia
02:52:54 PM
Usually, loans of which amount are given to international students with high financial need?
Emma Carlisle
02:53:08 PM
Does an early decision or early action application impact the merit based scholarships.
Gotcha, and as we wrap up, were there any other questions and I know there's a couple in here. They're a little bit specific to the international student process, but I would encourage those students to look at the guide that I posted just a few minutes ago. I'm also about to post the contact information for admission counselors and and with that it will also have the contact information for Tim Neal, who we mentioned earlier who works with our international students.
And so for some of those very specific questions, please feel free to reach out to Tim. He'll be the best resource in getting those specific questions answered. He can also help connect to you guys with the Office of Global Citizenship that we have here on campus.

But let's see. But with that, I'll go ahead and go to this page right here. And it has the financial aid offices email address. I know Beth mentioned that earlier as a resource to reach out for further questions. Like I just said, I'm about to post in just a second here. The link in the chat that is to all of our admission counselors and each of us as counselors. We are hosting virtual appointments right now. We are going to start our travel season pretty soon.
So keep it on your email in case where in your area, but use that opportunity for like virtual counselor appointments to ask questions not only just about financial aid, but if you have any questions specific to the application process visiting Swanee if you're not able to student life. All those types of things. It's a great resource to connect with your counselor and then lastly just reviewing past tiger tips. Like I said at the beginning, this session is part of a longer series, so it's the 9th.
In the series of tiger tips, so helping you start that college search process and other sessions that we had talked about. Like I said, testing, but we've also had blog post podcast, so varying forms of media to help you throughout that process. But with that, anything else? Beth as we closeout.
Awesome awesome. Well thank you so much, Beth, and thank you all for joining us today. Feel free to to continue to leave in a chat. I'll hang out here for a bit if you guys have any less.
Lingering questions here and there, but also feel free to. Like I said, point to these resources, you could get stuck and then also keep an eye out on your email for our next tiger tip which will be coming up shortly here. And other than that have a great rest of the week and a good weekend.

Is there a typical profile of a student who receives a merit scholarship? (test scores, GPA)
Shiro Burnette
03:00:24 PM
Hi Hannah, we review holistically, thus there is not a set profile for scholarships. You can view our mid 50% range of test scores and GPA to gather an idea of what we typically see: https://new.sewanee.edu/admission-aid/application-process/application-review/
