Hi! Cady Russell from Austin, TX
Awesome hi everyone. My name is Tim Nilan. I am the associate director of admission at Swanee, the University of the South. We're going to get started here in a moment. I just want to thank you all for coming. Thanks for being here on a Monday afternoon on Monday evening. Depending on where you are in the world, maybe Monday Tuesday morning. But thank you all for being here. It's so great to have such a large group talking about scholarships in 820.
So get started here in a minute and I do want to thank my colleague Shiro Burnett also admission counselor animal um of the University for helping manage the chat feature. I want to make a quick plug for the chat so feel free to start chatting in your questions that you have about this topic of academic scholarships and maybe any aid questions that you have. Shiro will be managing the chat feature he does have to hit approve on those questions so.
Don't be worried if you've submitted a question you don't have to submit it multiple times. Shiro will be managing that, so go ahead and start chatting in questions, topics, things that you want us to talk about into that chat feature so we can have those ready, and I'll be sure to address those at the end of my presentation.
Can see a couple more people coming in. We have a great size group.
Coming in, it looks like things have started to taper off, so I'll go ahead and get started. So my name is Tim Neil and I'm the associate director of admission. I also work with our international students so high there to any international student as part of the mix I will be going over a couple of these topics. So who's swaney is what's our class profile look like from the previous year? What scholarship opportunities to Swanee have to offer? What are the application process in the review process like?
For those those scholarships.
Danelle
04:04:36 PM
Hi, My name is Danelle and I'm from Jamaica
So let's get started. So so 1E is a small liberal Arts and Sciences University on top of the Cumberland Plateau in Suwannee, Tennessee. We're located 45 minutes from Chattanooga, an hour and a half from Nashville, TN an about 2 1/2 hours from Atlanta, GA were intentionally small student body of 1700 students, but geographically incredibly diverse. Where the University of the South, but we get students from 44 different States and over 30 different countries.
We're haunted 13,000 acres, making us the second largest campus in the US where students really have the ability to use the campus as a classroom. We call ourselves the domain, the mountain, because students really can get outside, go rock climbing, hiking, caving, canoeing, working alongside the Swanee outing program to take part in the extra curricular component of our campus, but also the academic component with 23 different courses in biology. We have environmental studies, environmental policy, forestry, geology.
A lot of different programs to choose from in terms of taking advantage of our campus.
Hannah
04:05:57 PM
Hello! My name is Hannah and I'm from Louisville, Kentucky.
And I'll go through those a little bit more at the end to show you what our majors and minors are. So this is a class of 2020 profile we had just over 5000 applications pretty evenly split between male and female. We enrolled just over 530 new students. It was the largest class in Suwannee's history. We were able to double the international student population on campus just from this class.
And a lot of that is contributed to Swanee's commitment to meeting 100% of demonstrated need for all first year first time students. Those are average AC T&SAT scores, but I want to emphasize the italics right below that and that is swaney has been test optional Kovid came and is still very much a part of our lives as we're doing things virtual and we have been test optional since 2009 so.
Jackie
04:06:40 PM
Hello I'm Jaqueline Salas from New Orleans LA
For any of you that have that question ready to go lock and loaded to talk about how has, how are we addressing test scores? If you apply test optional, we won't review test scores if you apply with test scores, great will consider those as part of the process.
So these are the typical scholarships at Swanee. Students have access to when applying to the University. So let's start with applying to the University. When you apply to Swanee, you're going to apply through our one application, the common application. It's free for all students applying to the University to submit their common out to Sony. You will indicate on your common application when you add Swanee to my to your my colleges list whether or not you want to submit the city or the AC T score, or whether or not you would like.
To apply test optional, you'll also indicate the round in which you would like to apply under, so he has three rounds but four deadlines. Early decision one November 15th early action which is December 1st early decision 2 which is January 15th and regular decision which is February 1st.
Shiro Burnette
04:08:11 PM
You can view our deadlines here: https://new.sewanee.edu/admission-aid/application-process/application-options-deadlines/
Just by applying to the University, you're automatically going to be considered for that first bullet point. There, the academic scholarships students will be invited to apply for a fellowship in the arts after they are admitted to the University and students in high school can be considered for razmi dollars. Raise me are micro scholarships that would be applied to your overall financial aid and scholarship package, which we can talk a little bit more.
About and Shiro has just chatted in the link to our deadlines and requirements for students. Depending on the type of student applying, you could be a first year US citizen. You could be a first year international student. You could be a transfer US citizen or a international transfer student applying to the University. You could just be home, school, applicant and so on.
So just by applying to the University, you're going to be considered for these different scholarships and I'll go through them really quickly. There is one vice Chancellor Scholar and each class it does cover full tuition, room board and fees. I want to say a preface. None of our scholarships will be above the cost of attendance. Cost of attendance equals tuition plus room plus board plus our activities fee.
So the Vice Chancellor, the Benedict, the global scholarships and the climb family scholarships are all up into the cost of attendance awards. We award 3 Benedict's per class annually. We award about 10 global scholars in the international class. Those are just reserved for international students and we award one Klein scholarship that is solely for an international student citizen of Hungary.
That was an endowed scholarship, which I'll talk about in a moment. So all of our you assistants are qualified for Vice Chancellor Benedict Wilkins Ekuban the Georgia for scholarships Georgia 4 just for students of residents of Georgia. So you're automatically eligible for those awards. International students are also going to be considered for the global and the client scholarship, not the Georgia for scholarship, so just by applying to the University will be considered for those.
Shiro Burnette
04:10:43 PM
You can reference our merit scholorships here:
Shiro Burnette
04:10:46 PM
https://new.sewanee.edu/admission-aid/cost-financial-aid/scholarships/
The bulk of our students will fall between the EQB range of 4000 to 25,000 and then a small subset of our applicants will be considered for Wilkins scholarships. Wilkins our top in scholarships if you're being considered for a Vice Chancellor Aura Benedict scholarship, you will automatically receive a Wilkins scholarship as part of your package.
So what is the process for applying for Vice Chancellor or Benedict scholarship? It's pretty simple. We usually have about 25 semifinalists all around the globe being considered for the Vice Chancellor Benedict. Awards are being considered at the same time we select four in total, so one vice chancellor and three Benedict's. So the timeline is in early March. We will invite semifinalists.
Those 25 students to submit a video essay answering one question and they have a week to submit that video essay to the admission search committee decisions will be released by mid March, so these are being reviewed by a faculty and student admission committee, no longer by the admission staff, so admissions staff will recommend who we would like as semifinalists and the semifinalists will be selected by a faculty and student Admission Committee.
And they're going to review your entire application, so everything from your common application to your recommendations, your GPA, average test scores. If you submit, choose to submit them, you can be a test optional and be considered for Vice Chancellor and Benedict scholarship. I want to emphasize that especially this year, any API, BA levels, dual enrollment credits that you might have self reported on your application or reported through your communications with us.
Your extracurriculars, and then, of course, that video essay.
So students will have a week from being noticed if they have been notified that they are being considered for the Vice Chancellor Imidic Scholarship to submit the video essay, any student that is a semifinalist, like I said, will be given automatically awoken scholarship which is valued at 26,000 and they'll be competing for that full ride award so tuition, room, board and fees. So those are our vice chancellor and Benedict scholarships. I want to emphasize that yes.
International students are eligible for the vice chancellor and Benedict awards just like any other first year applicant.
I'll go through this one rather quickly because I know that the audience for this is rather small, but the client family scholarship was gifted by the Klein family, a lum of Swaney's wife is a was of Hungarian descent, and this covers one student the ability to attend Swanee for no cost, so no cost of tuition room board fees, so the client application will be due January 8th.
Rahul
04:13:56 PM
Hello, I'm Rahul Valecha from Indore, India.
Of this year in 2021, eligible applicants will be interviewed in mid January with decisions being released in late January. Again, the same will be an admission staff and student admission committee will be reviewing the entire application recommendations, GPA test scores if you choose to submit them and everything else there along with the interview component, I want to emphasize that unfortunately, yes, this is very specific and only for international citizens of.
Hungry.
And then our last sort of scholarship opportunity are for international students. There is no separate application for this. This is just based on your application to Suwannee along with your financial documents. The CSS profile, an swannies proof of Finance form. These are just for international students. This is based on your academic profile and your family's financial need, so we will as the Mission Committee for.
Selecting international students for admission and scholarship will review an hand. Select ten students to receive the global scholarship. We do recommend that international students applying to the University. Do you show proficiency or show proof of at least 5000 US dollars so that they can cover personal expenses of books, travel to campus, health insurance Visa and see this cost as well?
So the fellowship in the arts. This is a scholarship, an award that is anyone can apply after they've been admitted to the University, and so the application will go live after you've been admitted. It is a short essay and also a portfolio that is submitted to those Department, so theater and dance, music or art, art history and studio art.
So there are eight fellows in each Department, and each of the three departments with 24 students selected. In total, this is a $2000 grant, stackable with any other award that you received it up to the cost of attendance. So if you were a Vice Chancellor Benedict, you wouldn't be receiving $2000 outside of the cost of attendance, so applications will be due in April. Faculty within each Department will review.
Those applications and render a decision by mid April and students have until the Suwannee deadline of May 1st to accept their award. Faculty in those departments are going to be reviewing your entire fellowship application, which will include the essay in the portfolio. This is really for students who want to enhance their work within the arts. You do not have to major in theater, dance, music, art history, but you certainly have to have an interest.
In Anna proficiency that is going to make you competitive. For those awards, it's going to also allow you to work hand in hand with the faculty within those departments. So a lot of students think that they're applying for this just solely to have 2000 extra dollars and reality. This is equivalent to a work study job. You'll be connected and working with those in the Department, but it's a great opportunity if you have an interest in music you might not want to measure at the full level.
But you have an interest in working in the music Department working alongside the faculty, connecting with possibly the Swanee Younger the Swanee Summer Music Festival. Working for that may be working in the Tennessee Williams Center for the theater and dance Department, or working alongside our history Studio Art faculty to get better connected with those that are interested and have the opportunities to connect to one of them with those faculty.
And finally raise me raise me is probably the most ambiguous of our words, as this is run outside of Suwannee, So what you can do is if you are a senior you can earn a raise me dollars which are micro scholarships that apply tored your financial aid package. This is not money given by raised me but your award.
Shiro Burnette
04:18:23 PM
You can start a Raise.Me account here: https://www.raise.me/
Earning money that would be guaranteed as a minimum amount that would be part of your overall financial aid package either need based or academic scholarship. So you can create a free account at Resmi or raise dot me which is their URL. You can insert certain criteria that you've already accomplished. Whether you have done a virtual visit with Swanee, you've taken in AP course or an IB course, or you've earned AB in certain coursework, or you have.
There's a whole list of different things that you can do. It's really to engage students in the college process from 9th all the way until their senior year to make sure that you're staying on top of top of the.
You know earning in doing what you need to be doing in order to be a competitive applicant, twords swaney. So those are our requirements listed right there. That is just a screenshot from our raise me profile. You really need to have a 3.0 GPA, have at least 15 credits from highschool. Your application, if you are a senior listening to that senior in high school currently listening to this, you would need to have your application in by.
Bri
04:19:33 PM
Is there a separate application to be considered for the Vice-Chancellors/Benedict scholarships? Or, are you automatically considered when you submit the common app?
Shiro Burnette
04:19:39 PM
Every Sewanee applicant is considered for academic scholarships simply by submitting the Common Application and all required admission documents on their Applicant Status Page. All scholarships are renewable with satisfactory academic progress.
December 1st to be considered for this and your earning deadline stops on December 1st as well so you wouldn't be able to apply anything after that to your overall package and I am going to ask. Yeah, Shiro has dropped in the URL for raised me. But again you can type in raised me and go to that that profile.
So what else is considered in applying to the University? So when you complete your common application, we're going to look at your extracurriculars. We're going to be looking at all of your recommendation letters. Your personal essay. We're also going to be looking at all of this other stuff as well. If you're applying for need based financial aid and you're a US citizen, you need to submit the FAFSA and the CSS profile in order to be considered for both federal aid.
And institutional aid. Federal aid being the free application for federal student aid, that's the FAFSA and then the CSS profile is for institutional aid. Keep studying, doing well, your senior year. We know there are interruptions to your probably your junior Ann and those younger listening to this, maybe your sophomore or freshman year. We get that we understand that there are interruptions due to Kovit. We're not going to hold those interruptions to you.
We understand that how you rebound due to adversity or due to challenges in your life are really the marker of success, and so we're really going to be looking at that. That high school transcript looking at how well you've done in those courses. What types of courses you've done, and really, I encourage every student out there and maybe parent listening to put that high school transcript down in front of you and ask yourself what it would a stranger think.
Of this transcript, if they had no other information applied, what would they think? And by looking at your transcript from that point of view and taking a step back, you really can engage on the common app in a deeper way. There is a section on the common application that says additional information, and on there you can put fill in the gaps. For us that says, you know, in my first year I suffered with an illness that kept me out of school for.
Awhile and this really prevented me from doing well in this class or this course, and the same goes for anything else that you want to apply as, quote unquote. Additional information. I would certainly encourage you to put that on the common application and listing that there SAT&ACT. It's completely up to you if you've had the ability to take those exams again, I will go back to our earlier slide. These are the ranges for Swanee. If you fall within those ranges, great. If you fall above those ranges, great. If you fall below those ranges.
And you think that that is competitive for you and you want to submit those scores? That is up to you. Absolutely up to you.
Shiro Burnette
04:23:06 PM
https://new.sewanee.edu/admission-aid/virtual-visit-options/
And then I'm staying in touch with us, so doing all those virtual visits I'm going to ask Shiro to drop in the link to our virtual visit page, which is just virtual 20 Edu. There are a lot of ways to engage with Swanee were considering all of this, but really, the academic component is a huge part of staying in contact in doing well to being eligible for those scholarships. Being awesome is those extracurriculars telling us about those jobs that you've had? Maybe it's.
You know family work at home that you've really been apart of.
Share that with us. We, as admission counselors, want to get to know you. We want to be able to advocate for you, so giving us all of all that you have to give us the ability to say yes, really gives us the armor when we're going in and making final decisions on who should be admitted to the University. These are our deadlines. The paragraph at the top is really what I've already mentioned. If you're an international applicant, you will just submit the CSS profile. You will not submit the FAFSA if you're an international applicant.
Shiro Burnette
04:23:45 PM
Find your Admission Counselor here: https://new.sewanee.edu/admission-aid/admission-counselors/
Just submit the CSS profile and then Suwannee's proof of Finance form that is on our on our website which is just international dot swaney Edu those deadlines about a third of our incoming class enrolls early decision, so those are either November 15th or January 15th. You can choose if you want to apply and submit your application by either of those deadlines. Early actions are most popular. Deadline a lot of students apply early action and that's December 1st.
And then our final deadline is regular decision of February 1st. So our total costs there listed at 61684 last year. This was the fall 2020 costs. We have tuition, fees, room and board. I do want to mention a couple of things about costs in the fact that we don't charge by credit hours. So if you choose to take a standard load, it's wanting would be 4 classes. If you choose to take a fifth course, you're not going to be charged for that fifth course on a credit by credit basis.
Lina
04:24:52 PM
Does Sewanee do interviews for high school seniors?
Shiro Burnette
04:24:59 PM
Seniors in high school have the opportunity to meet with Admission Counselors via phone, Google Hangout, WeChat, or Zoom. Virtual appointments last about 20 to 25 minutes and are non-evaluative.
Shiro Burnette
04:25:10 PM
https://new.sewanee.edu/admission-aid/visit/campus-visit-options/virtual-appointments/
And laundry and printing are both included in the cost. Your career services are also included in the cost. We also have one meal plan in Swanee it's unlimited. You can eat in the dining Hall as much as you'd like. That is also built into the room and board cost so you don't have to figure out how much. How many meals am I going to eat next year? Or when I enroll it? Swaney same for living. It's all the same cost across campus and we can go through that.
Isa
04:25:29 PM
How has covid affected financial aid?
Now I see a lot of questions coming in Flurrying and on this topic I'm going to leave this slide up for a second and just want to get to a couple of your questions so I see the first question was how is covid affected financial aid? Well really for Suwannee we committed last year to meeting 100% demonstrated need for all first year first time students and we're committed to keeping that promise as well. The Board of Regents.
Shiro Burnette
04:25:51 PM
https://new.sewanee.edu/admission-aid/meeting-full-need/
Want everyone by the year 2026 on campus to have 100% of their need met in the incoming class, we enrolled a third of our students were first generation students in a third repel. Eligible students who were really proud of that work. We have a long way to go, of course, but by meeting full need and continuing to meet full need for for this class that we're about to enroll as well, really a provides a level of access for all of these academic programs that we have listed here.
But a way for students to have a little bit of Peace of Mind in applying to the University. Not only is it free to apply to Swanee, but we feel that by meaningful need students can make a better decision on where they want to attend for the next four years. And so if you're not ready to commit yourself to early decision, that's OK. Applying early action does not commit yourself to the University you have until May 1st for both.
Early action and regular decision to make your decision on whether or not to enroll. Of course, I won't lose anymore hair, and I think our Dean would say the same if you choose to deposit earlier. Early decision students certainly do have a chance to start working on their enrollment forms earlier. And if you have any questions about applying early decision, I would encourage you to sign up for an early decision phone call. And I'm going to ask Shiro.
To drop in the link to schedule a phone call. If you are interested in applying early decision to the University.
Drew
04:27:31 PM
Will the amount of financial aid/scholarships granted be less next year because of COVID?
I am going to go with this next question as well. Drew your question about will the amount of financial aid scholarship grants be less than next year because of Kovid. It's along the same line. Sony is committed to meeting 100% of demonstrated need. Our scholarships. We plan fully to continue to offer the scholarships that we offered this year. The amounts could change ever so slightly, but I don't for see them going in the reverse. They could if anything.
Riley
04:28:18 PM
Does Sewanee take outside scholarships?
Be increased ever so slightly, but we won't know that for sure until about December, but at least for financial aid, we are committed to meeting 100% of need. So if you are admitted, your needs will be met by the University as long as you qualify for need based aid and have submitted all of your documents to the University. Just want to take outside scholarships? Absolutely. If you receive outside scholarships up to, I believe it's a $7500 amount.

Does aid/scholarships go away if you defer your admissions?
That can influence your financial aid package, so I would be sure before you accept those outside scholarships that you just connect with the office of financial aid to make sure that it doesn't influence your overall financial aid package. And Shiro, if you could drop in the meeting full need link as well, it has a full list of FA cues associated with applying for need based financial aid and what is meaningful need mean? Great question. Does aid scholarship go away if you defer your admission?
That's I know a popular question this year we had about a dozen students apply for defer enrollment. We did not take their scholarship away, so deferring your enrollment can happen after you've been admitted to the University. It is just a year. So a gap year you would be applying to the University. We do require an additional $1000 deposit to the University, and we guarantee your spot in the following class and your scholarship for the remaining year.
And then in terms of need based financial aid, you're going to come in at the cost of the year that we that you would start at Swanee. So we don't guarantee the costs for that year, but we do encourage students to make sure they have their financial aid documents. And in case there's any sort of major change to your family's finances, so you would need to reapply for need based financial aid.

Is there a cap on RaiseMe dollars?
Some other questions. Is there a cap on raise me dollars? There is a cap and I am showing my weakness here so I'm going to ask Sharrow. I believe it's $10,000, but I could be wrong. I'm gonna ask Shiro to chat in our landing page from raise me and I believe it says so on there. I'm sorry Elizabeth for not having the specific dollar amount there.
OK, a couple of these questions are a little bit long so bear with me for a moment.

A couple of these questions about financial aid are rather specific, and so I'm going to drop in my email address and I can connect you with the financial aid office, or you can email finaidx1e.edu. Sorry, then aid at swanee.edu so that you can. I know there's some questions coming in about you know, custody as it revolves around financial aid.
Shiro Burnette

And whose income is going to be considered with those really specific questions. I'd rather defer you to the financial aid office, then give you incorrect information.
Rhiannon
04:31:32 PM
When RaiseMe gives me a number that Sewanee is offering, is that guaranteed? How does that work. And is that money on top of other scholarships through Sewanee?
Right so next question about raise me so when Razmi gives a number that's one is offering, is that a guarantee? How does that work and is that money on top of other scholarships through Suwannee? So with earnings with raised me you are awarded that amount. If you're admitted to the University and that is going to be factored in.
To your overall financial aid package. So if you receive that same amount in terms of a scholarship, the two are not going to be stacked on top of each other. But think of it as a floor. It is at least the bare minimum that you would receive as part of your overall financial aid package.

04:32:11 PM
What are the major criteria for the Global Scholars program? Could you please describe an average global scholar's profile
Global scholars, you know those students tend to be our strongest students in the international class. Alot of those global scholarships do go out in early decision one just given the sheer number of international applications that we have each year. Last year we had 1100 international applicants over 100 different students applying early decision and we only have 10 of them. So you can imagine the selectivity that's going into choosing our global scholars.
But they tend to have high academic profile. Really strong interviews with me. I invite students to apply to schedule an interview with me if they are being considered for admission for the global scholarship or for any application any international applicant will be considered for admission and scholarship, and if they are then I will invite them to connect with me. So so yes, certainly global scholars are really our top in.
International students and if you are looking for the full ride scholarship, I would highly consider early decision for the global scholarship.

Awesome, I said what's the average debt of osuani grad? It's around $24,000 after over your four years.

Is demonstrated interest in the university also a criteria for acceptance?
Is demonstrated interest in the University also a criteria for admission acceptance? Yes, we do consider demonstrating your interest. So virtual visits connecting with your admission counselor for virtual counselor appointment. I'm not sure if Shiro dropped that in earlier, but absolutely connecting with us is a big part. I mean, our associate Dean, Lisa Burns, talks about this all the time, and I couldn't agree with it more. It's about thinking about. Imagine there being a dining room table.
Along University Ave with 500 seats, we're really thinking about who do we want to invite to our dinner table? Who do we want to have those conversations with? Whether or not we agree with them or not? Who do we want to engage with during our time at Swanee? And really, we're setting up this amazing community of young, bright, intelligent, independent thinkers. And so when we're looking at really the types of students that we want to bring to campus.
We're really trying to think about OK. Who do we want to invite to our dinner room table? So having the opportunity to engage with us online, I think has really provided this level of equity and access to students that wouldn't necessarily have the chance to visit campus. Now. That being said, if you can visit campus, we are open to seniors in high school right now. Can schedule a campus visit with the University on line. It's at visit.20.edu.
And you'll have the opportunity to do a guided tour or Self Guided Tour.
Couple of other questions.

Do you have to re apply for your scholarships/ financial aid package every year?
Do you have to reapply for scholarships or financial aid packages every year? You do not have to reapply for scholarship.
It is automatically excuse me. Guaranteed for your four years consecutive years of study on campus financial aid. You would have to reapply for every year just to recertify. The amount of aid that you've been awarded so.

Are there any other Department scholarships outside of the arts that are not? Those are the awards that Suwannee has. Do you get scholarship for studying abroad? The great question. So as part of the Swanee pledge which I will go over to. This is one other benefit and equity and access to applying to Suwannee. Not only is your financial need met, but the Swanee pledges apart of that. So we pledge to provide funding for at least one summer internship or research assistantship.
So if you earn an internship outside on your own.
Shiro Burnette

Or through the Career Center you have the opportunity to apply for funding through the Career Center to be awarded and that funding is not static. It will change depending on where you're going in the world. We do have about two dozen.
Excuse me, two dozen students applying for internships abroad. Maybe it's back to their hometown, but they'll work with a Career Center on that or the undergraduate research office for research research funding.
And we also pledge that you can study abroad at no additional tuition cost, and it's for a semester long study abroad program. We have 200 abroad programs on every continent around the globe. So really taking those dollars with you is a huge advantage to choosing Swanee. And then we pledge that you'll graduate with at least one major in four years or less. Otherwise your fifth year is tuition free. So if someone has done something to prevent you from.
Graduating from on time will make sure that you can do so financially overhead that fit here.
OK, a couple other questions.

Do those who apply ED have better chance of scholarships than those who apply EA?
Do those who apply Ed have a better chance of scholarships than those who apply early action now?
I you know, just in terms of being considered for the vice chancellors, the Benedict the Wilkins, the EP, no, absolutely not. Now I will say that one caveat to that is the global scholarship, which are worded just to international students. Those tend to go more so in early decision, one because of the academic caliber of the students applying early decision, we have as many strong students applying early action.
And regular decision. But because we have so many applying early decision one. That's where a lot of the global scholarships tend to go out.

Is the island ecology program always offered, or is there some sort of factors that go into whether or not is offered that year so the island ecology program is run by the faculty? The Office of admission does not get to choose when that program runs. I'm not sure due to Kovid when that program, if it was able to run. I know it wasn't. I don't think it was able to run this past summer, but that will just depend on the faculty that are teaching in those departments on whether or not that can run.

$12K for RaiseMe.
And I've gotten some number from Hali. Thank you so much, it looks like it's $12,000 for raise me. Is your cap. So there you go, there's the answer there.
So it looks like I've answered most of the questions. I'm not seeing any others that are coming in. I do want to also mention the 24 varsity athletic teams that we have. A lot of schools that are Division One or division two are able to offer athletic scholarships. Swaney is not one of those where Division Three school. So based on your academic performance in high school, all of the other information that I provided earlier. That's what we're going to consider you for academic scholarships.
That's what ultimately will make you eligible to become a semi finalist for the Vice Chancellor, the Benedict or the global scholarship or the client scholarship as well. We are academics entered first all of the athletic information that's helpful as part of reviewing your application. That's what we want to do in terms of inviting those to the dinner table. But athletic scholarships are not a part of the Division Three commitment.
And so about a third of our students each year do come in as recruited varsity athletes, but but they are being considered for the Wilkins and the ecobee scholarships just like anyone else. And I'll go back. I know I keep referring to those scholarships, so I'll go back so you can see what those words are.

If we send our application early would we get a decision earlier than the expected date?
Another question just came in about referencing rolling admissions. So if we send our application early, would we get a decision earlier than expected date? We're not a rolling decision University, so early decision one applications are due on November 15th. Our goal this year is to render an admission decision with the scholarship decision that will both be in your online portal will email you when those go live. We tend to release those decisions by December 15th.
Early action we like to have those out by the end of January, so we're returning those admission and scholarship decisions by the end of January. Early decision two, we try to get those out by beginning of February if not early late January as well. And then regular decision students will find out about their award and admission by middle of March, usually March 15th.

That's a great question. All of these so is are the amounts shown.
Anna
04:42:33 PM
Do you wait until after the deadline to start reviewing applications?
Annual or spread out over four years. Those are annual amount, so $26,000 per year or the Ekeby Scholarship, which is ranges from 4000 to $25,000 per year and the Georgia 4 is $4000 per year. The Georgia 4 is for residents of the state of Georgia in the United States and that is stackable, just like the The Fellowship in the arts. The Fellowship in the Arts is $2000 per year.
And Stackable
these are great questions.
Do you wait until after the deadline to start reviewing applications? I wish, although I'm sure someone from our office is listening, we don't have the time or the capacity to start reviewing applications after the deadline. We start reviewing those applications a couple of weeks ago. We have already reviewed over 100 different applications to the University where the good news is that the first reader on every application is going to be the territory manager, so for me I manage and.
Work with students in New England, excluding Connecticut and international students. So as those applications come in, I'm the first reader on those. Same with Shiro, he has a whole slew of different states that he will be the first reader on. We also do team reading so there are multiple people on the staff that will review applications together. They make a recommended decision and then it goes onto a host of team reads or first second readers throughout. And then we're going to review the entire pool as an office 2.
Can select and finalize our decision so that we can have those out on time throughout each cycle.
Rahul
04:43:41 PM
how many wilikins scholarships are given each year?
How many Wilkins scholarships are given out each year? It's usually between just over 100. Wilkins scholarships are given out, but it can vary. That's why I didn't want to put in a specific number there. It also depends on the number of applications that we have and how many students we deem competitive in our pool, so we're looking at your GPA. We're looking at Test scores if you submit them. We're looking at the quality of your essay. There really isn't. Only we're going to cap these at.
A certain number so it can vary on average over 100.

For practical purposes for students, is there a difference between the Vice-Chancellor and Benedict scholarships?
For practical purposes, for students, is there a difference between the vice chancellor and the Benedict Scholarship? There is and that has to do with the selection process. The Vice Chancellor will, our vice chancellor of the University will actually select from the Benedict scholars one vice chancellor in terms of amount, dollar amount. No, they're the exact same. You're still getting a full tuition award, but the Vice Chancellor will actually read through your application. The president of the University.
Also, the mayor of Swanee will hand selected those of the. Those semifinals will hand select one vice chancellor.

Does submitting your application closer to the deadline hurt your chances of being admitted?
Shiro Burnette
04:45:18 PM
Meet our new Vice-Chancellor!: https://new.sewanee.edu/sewanee-s-17th-vice-chancellor/
Does submitting your application closer to the deadline hurt your chances of being admitted? OK, so I want to emphasize deadlines. What do deadlines mean? So November 15th is our deadline to submitting your early decision. One application, it is important that that is only one of the components to your file being complete, so you have your common application. You have two letters of recommendation. You have your.
High school profile. You have your academic transcript. All of that and test scores. If you choose to submit them. All of that goes in to completing your file to Swanee your application is the common app. Your file is everything else. After you applied to the University, it takes about 5 to 7 business days for us to verify your information and email you a login credential to your applicant status page. Your applicant status page is where you'll be able to keep track of all of your required documents so that they are.
In on time.
I always urges student if you're applying early decision, try and get it in a week early so that you can make sure that all of your supplemental pieces are in on time. Sure, if you get in a letter of recommendation or things get held up, we understand there a lot of other circumstances to applying to colleges. This year we're going to be flexible a couple of days to each of those deadlines. So if a letter of recommendation isn't in by November 15th, don't fret. But do know that we would like to have your entire file in and complete by those deadlines.
The sooner you get those documents in, the sooner we can render admission decision and more importantly, the sooner you get financial aid documents and the FAFSA and CSS profile or the CSS profile and the proof of Finance form. If you're an international applicant, the sooner we can return financial aid package financial aid packages not come with your admission and scholarship decision. It usually takes a couple weeks after so we know that a couple of years ago the federal government moved to prior prior year.
In terms of applying for need based financial aid so the FAFSA and CSS profile went live on October 1st, you can access both of those online and submit those to the University as quickly as possible. You would submit those both electronically and then once we receive them, You'll see them populate on your applicant status page to notify you that we have received them as well.
Alright, are there any other questions?
Bri
04:47:39 PM
Scholarships go towards the cost of the families expected contribution, right? We would still receive financial aid provided by Sewanee plus the scholarship?
OK, here's another one.
Scholarships go towards the cost of families expected contribution, right? We still receive financial aid provided by Swanee, plus the scholarship. So your overall I would. I would like to think of your the total cost of attendance is 61680. Plus there are some estimated costs that are built into your financial aid package. Those estimated costs are not direct build costs. Those are indirect costs. So you're going to see a slightly higher total cost of attendance. That does not mean that you'll owe all of that money to the University.
When you're, when you receive your financial aid package, the first part we're going to package you with is scholarships. If you received a scholarship that is going to be subtracted from the total direct cost, if you receive as part of your need based aid package, your grant aid and then a federal loan. Those federal loans are capped and you can see those on the earlier link that Shiro provided related to need based financial aid. You can see what those those loans are. You do not have to accept those loans.
But federal loans are a part of the financial aid package, just like scholarships would be. And just like grant dollars would be. So all three of those combined would go into what we would subtract from your total direct costs, and that would be what we expect your family to contribute to your education at Swanee. So all of that combined it's pretty easy to read once you actually receive your financial aid package, you would be able to see what it is breakdown per semester.
Hannah
04:49:18 PM
Can you enter Sewanee on your fafsa before you apply to the college?
It's a great question. Can you enter Swanee on your fax it before you apply to the college? Absolutely you can start working on the FAFSA and CSS profile. Get those in our priority deadline for applying for need based aid is December 1st so I recommend getting those in sooner rather than later. Just think of this like. Think of it like this. The longer you wait to submit all of those financial aid documents, the longer it takes for us to return your portal information and all of those.
The checks so that you know that we have your information, so it's just better to get things into earlier and submitted, because if you qualify for need based aid and we received your FAFSA and the profile and it looks like we might need additional information, the financial aid office has their own portal and they're going to ask you to submit additional tax returns or W2 statements or anything like that. So it's really important that you can get those in as soon as possible so that you can take take advantage of those.
Isa
04:50:16 PM
Do take into consideration if an applicant is a minority/ first-generation college student for financial aid and scholarships?
Alright couple questions about how we review so I just want to preface this scholarships are based on your academic performance. They're not going to be based on your status as a first generation college student or any other status that you might have, and so those awards are based on your academic performance. In high school we will recalculate your GPA down to a 4.0 scale. We will take what is on your high school transcript as well.
Shiro Burnette
04:51:00 PM
https://new.sewanee.edu/admission-aid/application-process/application-review/
And look at all of that information. Will look at the rigor of those courses and then determine scholarships as part of that. It also has a component that you can't really control, and that's who else is applying to the University. We had 5000 applications last year. There are a lot of qualified students. Could we have admitted most of them absolutely, but holistic admissions. We're looking at the essay we're looking at the scholar or looking at your transcript. The rigor in your classes, what courses you took, what was at your high school, and how well did you do in those classes. All of that combined to really.
Make sure that we are appropriately awarding scholarships to our students.
Edie
04:51:28 PM
Do you look at the section of the CSS profile that explains any special circumstances related to finances (loss of job, etc)?
Yes, any great question do we look at the section on the CSS profile that explains any special circumstances related to finances? I want to say not we because the office of admission does not look at that information. The office financial aid absolutely does, and Beth Kregor are so CDN financial aid would probably smack my hand if I didn't at least tell you that yes, they look at every single document. And because the CSS pro.
While is so long and arduous to complete, you can imagine how long it is to take to review, and so it's really important that families are getting that in on time. And I know we only have time for maybe a couple more questions, so I want to.
Make sure that we get to them and also make sure that we get you out of here on time.
Anna
04:52:27 PM
If you send all the documents such as CSS profile and test scores a couple of weeks before the deadline, but submit CommonApp a little bit later, will it still take about 7 days to process the whole file?
So if you send all the documents such as CSS profile in test scores, a couple weeks couple of weeks before the deadline, but comment out a little bit later, will it take seven days to process a whole file so the one thing that's going to trigger your application to receive your login credentials is your common app. So it's really important that you get your common application in. You can submit all of that other stuff and we will link it up. And so when we verify your common application.
We verify that information that can take 5 to 7 business days depending on when you submit. Right now we're a little bit slower, but once November hits it's like all the applications are starting to roll in. We already have close to 1/4 of what we had last year in applications, and so the more applications that roll in, the longer it takes for us to verify the information and get that back out to you. So it's incredibly important that you're able to get that common application into us. I know a lot of students tend to want to wait.
To hit submit because they want to Polish their essay, they want to make sure everything looks right, but really, you know, drum up that courage hit submit on that application so that you can have your information submitted back to you. Of course, you know making sure that you're looking checking for errors, but make sure that that your common application is in so you will not receive a login credential until we have your common application. But the good news is, if you've submitted all of that other stuff early, then your checklist will start showing green checks.

Does the CSS profile need to be done before you submit your application?
All the way through and you won't have to keep up with anything else. Does the CSS profile need to be done before you submit your application?
I know the CSS profile could come in after your common application. That's absolutely fine. Well, we only have 6 minutes left.
