06:03:44 PM
Hi I'm Ryan from Birmingham AL
Good evening everyone and welcome to tonight's Swanee session where our focus will be on making it your domain enrollment 101 and will spend some time together tonight talking about all the exciting tasks and items that you'll take care of this summer to best prepare you for your arrival at Swanee in August. My name is Ryan Castle. I serve as the associate Dean of admission here and at the University of the South, and I'm pleased to be with you tonight. So what you can expect is I will go over some checklist items that are available now.
Uh, I will be previewing some future checklist items. So what you might anticipate in the coming weeks and months, we're going to share with you some early optional programs that we have here at Swanee and we will have a couple of real experts talking about those. Some current students who serve as leaders and Erectors of those programs, and that's finding your place in pre. So I hope you will consider those and then we will rap it up with any question answer that you have and will do our best to answer those.
Those questions and those thoughts that are on your mind.
So to start where we where we need to send you to begin your enrollment on boarding process is to your applicant status page. This is the. This is the site where you've gone to look at your applicant checklist to see if your test scores are in or your transcript. Your teacher wreck that was also the site where many of you went to see your admission decision and hopefully for those of you watching tonight. That was a very positive decision. We were very excited.
About an hour ago, we released our regular decision notices, and so some of you might have received good news tonight even and then we hope that you're watching and so excited that you'll make that commitment to enrollsoonsoitsengagedswanning.edu/status. And once you place that enrollment deposit that will then become your enrollment checklist.
Some of the items that are on there now, one of them is going to be what's called the academic inventory and we would love for you to get started with this right away. Well over 100 students have already completed their academic inventory and it's due May 11th. What you can expect out of it is it will likely lead to some on some language placement exams at Swanee, all students will take a foreign language through at least the 300 level we really believe in the idea of cross cultural understanding.
Will Eades
06:06:04 PM
Hey I'm Will from Dallas, Texas
And the language pieces so important to that and so on. Your academic inventory, you will report what languages you have studied in the past, and then for the most of those languages there will be a corresponding language placement exam that you will take online. And then our faculty will review that and then when it comes time to schedule classes, you will know what the language level to which have been placed. Now, just because you have taken Latin in high school.
And you take that language placement exam. That doesn't mean you're taking Latin and and at Swanee we have nine different languages from which to choose, so you can continue with the language you've had. Or you can start fresh with something that's brand new to you.
You'll also answer some questions about your chemistry background in your calculus background. Now, this does not mean you'll take chemistry or calculus, but should you should you seek to take those later, our academic advisors will know what placement is best for you as designed. An set by those faculty members in those departments, you'll also see a section on there for you to document your history. If you've taken any AP exams, IB exams, higher level Cambridge courses, or dual enrollment courses.
Kate Bailey
06:07:34 PM
Hi! I’m Kate from Corinth, MS.
It is possible for some of those to come in as course credit an we offer links to our registrar's website so you can see how those different tests come in. Now the Dual enrollment classes if you've taken those, what we will ask for you to indicate such on your academic inventory and then are, you will need to send those college transcripts to the registrar's office, and they will do a a case by case review and before entering swanna, you'll know if those courses will come in.
And how they will count? Put your curriculum at Swanee. They may count order core curriculum area. It might count toward an elective area as well.
And this whole all this information will help our academic advisors prepare your schedule for when you do come in. Later. More on that in a bit.
Now identified the academic inventory. Truth be told I probably should have made that the second slide, because this is really where I want you to start and you'll see the due date May 8th activate your Swanee Network ID. Sometimes we call it activate your Swanee username. We've used those terms interchangeably, so you might either see it as network ID or your Swanee username that is, that is your first step, because what you do with that, that's where you create your will be given your username.
In our initial password and then you create your new password, you'll create your security questions for our single sign-on systems and so that one set of login credentials will be used for most every system on campus during your time at Swanee, including your email address and we you can start using your email address right away. I know some of you have placed your enrollment deposits. I hope it was exciting that first time when you get to email someone from yourswanee.edu email address, so we encourage you to.

Peyton from Houston, Tx
To log into their an to start letting everyone know just how excited you are to be a Swanee student.
Nhu Nguyen Phuc
06:09:32 PM
Hi, I'm Nhu Nguyen from Vietnam.
Something I will tell you is that this is swannies web swannies email platform is Google based, so whenever you go to this checklist item and you see the you click on the link, it will look like you're creating a Google account and so I just don't want that to throw you off at all. The it's referred to asswanee.edu of course, but the underlying email platform is Google and then of course that will give you access to your Google Drive Ann.
That the host of items that you have available to you.
So another additional checklist items the contact and communication form when you applied for admission back in August or September, or some of you just a few weeks ago for our February 1st deadline, you supplied information about where you live, what's your contact information, parents or Guardian? We want you to reconfirm that or possibly update that for us. We want you to share emergency contact information communication. As I said earlier, it's very important to us so.
We want to know what language is spoken in the home, and so if it's a language other than English, we want to be able to find our resources on campus so that if we do need to communicate with the family member that we can do that as best as possible and in the most clear way so that contact and communication form is available now. Now what might you expect in the future? This is one that I believe most students get the most excited about and we call that you're living form, and that is for your residential life staff.
To gather information about you so that they can best match you up with a roommate that they think is going to be a really good fit. There will be some basic questions, such as are you a morning person or are you a night person? Do you like your own neat, messy or you like some of my kids at home and their rooms are a disaster?
Where do you plan to study? Do you see yourself studying in your room or out on the quad or in the library?
There fun questions such as if you could have any song play when you walk into a room what that would that be and why so if you could start thinking about that. There's the chat feature Cassidy's running it. I'm sure we'd love to start seeing some songs. Come and we'd love to see what you are what you are thinking about there and share that with your future classmates.
Cassidy Martin
06:11:48 PM
If you know your favorite song, feel free to share!
Students, I I beg of you this I bet there are some parents out here watching tonight too.
Please do this on your own students. All right, all of this needs to be done on your own, but if if nothing else did the living form on your own because students when asked the question, are you going to be an early riser and read over your course materials an hour before class? How do you think your parents are going to answer that? Of course you are going to do that. Are you going to keep your room neat and tidy? Yes, they're going to say that so students we need your voice in this and that's so important so parents hands off.
Hands off you do the financial aid forms. That's your job.
Now, as exciting as living form is, I want to set your expectation one of the hardest weights you're going to have is for that rooming information to come out. The students are in the room, and they're giving me. Head nods. Hear it, you're going to submit this in early summer.
And you're going to wait and wait and wait. And it's early August when you are notified of your residence Hall as well as your roommate assignment. Why do we make you wait so long? We would, all of us would love for it to be earlier, but I have to tell you these are real people making matches. This these are not put into a system and algorithms run and spit out remain matches. These are real people.
You value real people. You value relationships. Otherwise, I don't think you.
Be looking at a school like Swanee, so we ask that you give us the this time for residential life staff to do what they can to make these matches and those housing assignments roommate assignments will be assigned in early August. Now I know there were some questions submitted about residential life because it's one of the most exciting things about the about this experience. This residential experience that we value so much at Swanee there was a question about can I use choose my own roommate and the answer is no. Freshman year, your roommate is.
Matched for you after freshman year. You're certainly free to use you and choose your roommate. There was a question about our theme houses. Now we have over a probably a dozen theme houses. We have the five language houses, Spanish, German, Russian, French and Italian. We have the women center. We have the greenhouse. We have the Interfaith House. We have the Writing House. We have a healthy Hut. You have so many options for the mouse and a question came in. Can first your students live in team houses?
And the answer to that is, I'm afraid not. So you will be in a residence Hall. We do our best to position freshman closer to the center of campus so that from day one you're you're close to the to the central quad. That's what we do, our best. Best to do so. Housing very exciting. Make sure you submit that form on time and students make sure you are submitting and sharing that information on your in your own voice.
My hope is in the next couple of weeks I'll be able to press the button so you can begin submitting your photo ID. One of the other questions that came in as you registered for this event tonight was what will you do it orientation? Will I need to? Well, I need to go to the ID office and have my photo taken.
We don't want you coming here and having to stand in lines. So what you do is you submit your photo ID and assuming that it's an acceptable ID photo, we will have your ID for you in your key packet. When you move into Swanee. Now what does acceptable ID mean? Well, follow the parameters we give you guidelines of what we expect. It needs to just be you. Your face needs to be visible. You know it doesn't want to be your side profile there. We can't see who you are there.
We put all those parameters in there until just make sure you're following those and so that's one less thing that you have to do orientation, because if you don't do it right, you will have to stand in line.
Other future checklist items. This one is no fun and that is your University Wellness form, so your health forms you have to submit every college across this country in world will make you submit health forms and vaccination records and all sorts of documentation.
If you don't do this on time and it's due June 15th, this is one of the items that will prevent you from moving in. Alright. One of my jobs on move in day is I service the filter in a families. Haven't done something they need to do. You have to talk to me and as friendly as I am, you don't want to talk to me on moving day because it means you've not done something that you needed to do and so do that Wellness form. You need to get your.
Doctors appointment set up. Hopefully it doesn't mean you have to get a shot. I hate shots but but it is important and get that getting that submitted other items over to the right there will be a summer reading and writing reflection assignments that that will be do and they will introduce you to that in the next few weeks. You will access something called handshake and handshake is out of our karere. Our Career Center at Swanee and if you were in last weeks swanee session you might have heard from Kim Hudson either the director of the Career Center and I'm certain she talked about the handshake program but that's how you learn about different internship.
That's that's where you will apply for your work study position. Should that be part of your financial aid notification. All whole host of different resources on handshake.
If you've been offered us student loan through your financial aid notice, you will either accept it or decline it through your enrollment checklist later in the summer. And this is an early August after you're notified where you're living. That is where you can do your car or bike registration. One of the other questions that came in is how many students have cars on campus. I don't know what exact percentage, but I'm positive it's well over half, and so it is important for you to do that car registration before you come, so that ideally, that's going to be waiting for you in your mailbox.
Whenever you arrive at Swanee, if you're a varsity athlete and around 1/3 of our students of our varsity athletes, it's a very. It's a great part of our campus community. There will be supplemental health forms for you to submit, and so those will be checklist items that will be posting very soon for deposited students.
Now earlier I talked about the academic inventory and I said that that the questions on the academic inventory will help our academic advisors identify a set of courses that will be strong for you and a good fit. What will also contribute to that course schedule will be you telling us what classes you like to take, and so in late May you will see your course selection form posted. And with that you were going to be introduced to the many different classes that we have. Is Swanee that first year students are eligible to take.
You're going to identify courses that are new and intriguing to you. You're going to identify courses in which you feel like you have confidence and experience, and then identify some other courses of interests. You list 12 different classes and that you would love to see on your first year schedule, and in most situations.
Figured the four classes that you take that first semester will come from that that that sample of 12. Again, it's really important to submit this on time and I said it opens in late May and one thing I want to say we don't open it until all of the foreign language placement exams have been done every year, as nice as I am. As friendly as I am and encourage you to do this on time, there are some students who don't do their foreign language placement when we ask and that delays your course selection.
And that could that could cause a little bit of issue with course availability down the road, and so really do. It's always good to do things on time, isn't it?
Parents, this may be up your alley and that's paying the bill. No fun, right? But it's important, you know we have a quality faculty here. We have incredible lab equipment. We have an incredible dining Hall. We have a beautiful buildings that we need to maintain an and all of that.
Quite frankly, cost some money and so it is important that the bill be paid and that is due by July 31st.
And as I mentioned with the health form earlier at the health form is not complete. That will prevent a student from being able to move in. This is the other item that's even less pleasant for me to talk to families about on move in day. If that bill hasn't been paid.
In early June you will be introduced to we call the Swanee afford site and where you're going to see this. That's right on your enrollment checklist. This is your one stop shop that I'm talking about tonight, so we will introduce the Swanee afford link and you'll log in using your Swanee username and those credentials that you make really soon.
One of the first things you need to do students is you need to get on that site and you need to grant your parents or guardians access anyone who might being be pitching in to pay that bill for you and you want them to be able to see what that bill is an login and make that payment you need to grant them access to this and so because students you you don't want to be stuck with that bill and so you'll notice on the slides I listed that twice because I really mean it.
You need to. You need to grant your parents access to it. Many of you will set up a payment plan, and that's where you can do this on the Swanee afford site and as a reminder, July 31st is when that bill for the fall semester is due.
Now thinking about a couple of early and optional programs and I'm going to talk about some of the logistics related to these and then you'll hear more in depth information from from our current students later one option that we have is finding your place it's called FYP and what this is you can move in 10 days early approximately 125 students do this and you start one of your classes and for those first 10 days that is your focus that one class again I'll let our.
Our student leaders talk more about FYP and and more in depth information. The Movement for FYP is August 12. That's a Wednesday and you will move right into your residence Hall room so you won't have to move into a temporary location and then change later. So that is a benefit so you can get to campus low early before everyone else arrives. The cost for it is $60.00 and that just covers books and supplies for that one class. Now, for some of our fall athletes, I do have to tell you that this conflicts with football.
Field hockey, soccer and volleyball. So if you're one of those false sport athletes, you'll have other other times in which will move in and the finding your place does conflict with that.
The courses for this summer are still being a stab liszt, but I wanted to give you a sampling of some of the 2019 courses and you can see those on the slide here.
And each has a different discipline. Each has a slightly different focus, so maybe it's chemistry. Maybe it's religion, maybe it's theater, or perhaps there was a German studies FYP course a few years ago.
So each has its own discipline, but the common theme.
Kelsey Jenks
06:23:18 PM
Does swimming conflict with FYP?
It makes these courses is this place swannies campus the Cumberland Plateau of the Greater Appalachian region, and so the idea of place is very important here.
Another option for you is called pre orientation. We just call it pre so it's a three day experience. It's run by our swanee outing program was just as a simply outstanding resource on campus that we have to help take advantage and introduce you to this place. We call the domain with over 50 miles of hiking trails, caves, lakes, waterfalls. I always say many, many colleges will take you by the fancy brand new indoor rock climbing wall climbing walls are millions of years old.
Cassidy Martin
06:24:05 PM
No Kelsey, as a swimmer you will be able to participate in FYP. Since swimming is a winter sport, your preseason will happen later in the year.
Cassidy Martin
06:24:28 PM
So yes, winter and spring sports can participate in both programs.
Because there are real rocks and you'll be out there exposing being exposed to those experiences. Again, three day program you'll move in Wednesday, August 19th. This does cost it is $260.00 because all the resources available through the Swanee adding program it it helps fund those programs. So for not only prevent throughout the year that you'll be able to continue taking advantage of, We do have 8 available, so if.
Silas McClung
06:24:44 PM
Does FYP conflict with PRE?
If cost would be prohibitive with either FP or pre, there's a spot on the registration form for you to indicate that, and the directores of those programs will review those those requests and then either waive fee or sometimes create a modified fee for it. So if those costs you think would prohibit you from doing one of these programs, I want you to remember that we do offer.
Cassidy Martin
06:25:01 PM
Yes, the two programs do conflict. You will have to choose one program.
We are flexible with those. As with FYP, it conflicts with our fall sports, so I'm just. I'm just now that you can't sign up for all of those you would do either pre or FIP. You can't do both because they definitely conflict with each other. Registration opens April 15th, so after your done doing your taxes on tax day, you can sign up. You can start signing up for FY or P or pre and remember we do need you to be a deposit or a committed.
Enrolled student to be able to sign up for those.
Uh, for our fall athletes. I spoke to our associate athletic director in the last day or two and he gave me the the the tentative move in dates for these sports. I do urge you though to confirm these with your coach, but right now we believe football move end to be Wednesday, August 12, August 18th. That will be a big move in day because it's cross-country soccer and volleyball and then field hockey is tentatively set for Thursday, August 20th.
Now some important dates for all that are coming up the first day that everyone needs to be here is Saturday, August 22nd and that's when orientation begins. So you may choose not to do FY Pierre pre. I hope all of you will do one of those programs. Aurora false board of course, but there are some students for various reasons who don't move until August 22nd. So that's the day you'll be gathered with your class for the first time as one cohort parents, we do have programming for you and that last.
Through early afternoon the following day, so the 23rd in this case, and at that point in time we are as nicely as possible. We are going to wave goodbye to you and let your students continue with experience. This experience on their own will be very nice when we wave goodbye, but we will wave goodbye to you on the 23rd. Classes begin on Wednesday, August 26th. Parents we may see you back here on family weekend at September 18th through the 20th if you're interested in other dates such as a fall break or when is Thanksgiving break. When I spring break.
Registrargotswanee.edu/calendars as you see on the slide that is the resource you can you can use to look at those dates.
Now, I don't believe that there are secrets in the world I just believe that there are questions that some people don't know to ask, and one of the great mysteries of Swanee. I'll tell you is where do you stay when you're here? We have a beautiful Swanee in, but I think there it's made up of around 40 rooms there, 40 beautiful rooms, but you aren't going to fit in the Swanee in on family weekend graduation weekend or those different events. And so I'm gonna let you again let you in on something that's not a secret, but just something most people don't know to ask.
Our culture here is that many people in the community will rent out their homes similar to like an Airbnb RVRBO, but you can see a listing of those homes. It's recall our Swanee Gateway and that's our alumni site. That's where you'll see a number of those homes listed. Many times families will join in together. They'll meet friends either on a campus visit or orientation and in the future will join in together and homes. And that's always great to see with that family atmosphere.
Emily Johnson
06:28:22 PM
Where do you register?
Before I invite the students in what I will do is eventually will lead into the Q and a portion, but I want you I want to highlight an email address and that is why SR20 at swanee.edu. If you're not familiar with what YSR means, it stands for a swannies, right? It's what we say to one another when we celebrate. When we greet each other, it's YS are. So why SR20 at swanee.edu? If you have questions about the on boarding and enrollment process and one of us will be back.
With you pretty promptly when you email that that address. So with that said, I'm going to turn the screen over 2. As I mentioned, the real experts and they're going to talk about pre an FYP and then will jump in and see what questions have gone. Answer more of it.
Cassidy Martin
06:29:08 PM
Emily, do you mean for PRE and FYP?
Yes, hi my name is Sophia. I'm a sophomore. I'm from Sherwood OR up. I am an earth science major. I'm running one of our theme houses that he's talking about. I run the music house.
Play a lot of music on campus right this country and I'm directing free this year. So I'm gonna talk to guys about.
Hi, my name is Ben. I'm a freshman. I did FYP.
Emily Johnson
06:29:43 PM
Yes!
And Super recently I am an intended anthropology major. I'm Hippocrates fellow and a Swanee Angel.
Cassidy Martin
06:29:52 PM
We will make sure to answer that with our students!
And up here, health educator.
And do you wanna explain when is funny Angel? It's really quick. Yeah I would love to sew. Sony has a folk story that when you pass through the gates like leaving campus you get a Guardian Angel that protects you until you come back to campus. And if you've been in the admissions office is a good chance you've heard this story. It's actually a really important part of campus culture.
So I will. This translates to for events on campus, their students that help orchestrate those events, and I'm part of that group in there called 20 Angels.
Awesome, yeah, that's really cool.
Uhm, OK, did you wanna talk about? I love to talk about. Uhm so finding your place is uhm.
Like everyone calls FIP, so like um like it was stated.
You come to campus 10 days early and it's like 100 students, so it's just you and a bunch of other freshmen who are having their first college experience. No upperclassmen, which is actually like so comfortable with being. You all live in the same dorm, So what what's going to happen is you get a pretty nice dorm on Central campus with nothing but freshman, typically freshman. Get good dorms, but typically they're not all freshman dorms, so it's Super.
Like wonderful, the housing that you get from F IP because you're here 10 days early and they want you to form a group. And that's exactly what happens in FYP.
Basically the whole group of 100 people like 1/4 of your class matriculate ING.
Become like a network of friends and 10 days on campus. Um, if IP is hard academic work because it's 10 days of um, class work, but.
It it really forms bonds that are that are so worth, uhm so worth participating the program for uhm, but most of your works outside it's Swanee and summer which is so beautiful and I would. I would definitely recommend FYP.
Well for free it's a little bit of a shorter program by a little bit. It's only three days, so it's much shorter program, but I guess to explain three would be good for me to start with SFP, so that is the outdoor program on campus and they'll put on like different excursions throughout the year that can have caving. I've done a lot of hikes with them, I've got a lot of running with them. They had biking, canoeing, kind of anything that you want.
Um, so they just used to putting on these trips for students all throughout the year, which is definitely something you should look into after orientation as well, but they put on pre which over the course of three days you can do canoeing. Could you climbing their low ropes course, just community outreach, hiking, caving?
Natasha Wanjiru
06:33:12 PM
Hi, I just joined the webinar, and I was wondering anyone tell me what FYP and PRE stand for.
There's a lot of options, So what will happen is you'll arrive on campus. You'll be greeted by a plethora of people in very brightly dressed garb.
Free has a very distinct.
To everyone's very goofy and outgoing, excited about the outdoors. Uhm, so yeah, you're greeted by a lot of very brightly dressed, enthusiastic people and will help you find your room room, key player, stuff in there. And then you're yanked out of your room to go meet your pre family and your pre family. You're going to get a little free mom every dad. It's funny if you don't know that much about pre in your incoming freshmen you'll hear.
Freshman talking upperclassmen and going like oh hey, dad or like what's up mom then? It's kind of confusing.
Cassidy Martin
06:34:01 PM
Hi Natasha. PRE stands for pre-orientation, and FYP stands for 'finding your place'. Both programs are orientation programs for incoming students.
Chris LeBlanc
06:34:06 PM
Finding Your Place and Pre-Orientation
But I will let you guys in on it right now. It's because they did pre pre parents a lot of my friends are preparedness and I haven't been to prepare and I worked in office last year. Um I'm kind of jealous. It's kinda. It's cute seeing everybody run up. Anyways, that's what the confusing but so your pre siblings are going to be. Other incoming freshman will be grouped into probably like 90 to groups. Don't quote me on that but there's a lot of groups that incoming freshman with parents and you guys are going to travel as little packs.
Over the course of three days you guys will go camping together a couple nights and you'll get to do a couple of his extrusions. I think you can do three out of the six different choices, so maybe caving and rock climbing and hiking for example.
Natasha Wanjiru

Thank you!
Yeah, and it's an awesome set up the beginning. There's also really big bonfire one night or every person skips the different families have different themes like last year the briefing was prehistoric and there was one family that was called ice rage. There's another family that was called Yo MTV. Welcome to my cave.
So I guess summary of pre lot of outdoor things you don't have to be outdoors to do it. I know people who have never gone camping before and they did pre in there like This is crazy. We slept outside.
But yeah, it's a good experience. Definitely recommend it. A little bit shorter, very high-energy, but another good way to get another campus for sure. Definitely can't go wrong with either. Yeah, could you guys? I'm sorry I'm talking in the voice from officer there, but would you guys mind telling us your favorite story from each program? So if you have maybe a favorite memory or something that just really stood out to you is kind of the essence of each one of these programs.
I I love this story please start yeah I'm super excited about.

Can y'all talk about the Order of the Gown?
So my FYP section. I don't know if it would be offered this year. It likely will is called ecology of home. Um, an my I had a professor key. You'll probably get to know him if you end up on campus and the first event that you do after you get your room key and get moved in as you meet with your 15 person class or FYP an.
Your professor comes in and like there's. It's basically like an introduction period. An immediately upon meeting. It was basically my first interaction with a college professor and I was like.

Wow, this is this is amazing like this is an amazing individual and UM. I I think the word was like kind of being an off and are the first day of FYP. We went out and kind of just walks on his campus like got to know it went out into the domain like did some hiking and we finish. This beautiful hike and we come up on this like perfect view. Morgan steep hopefully will get to know that place and doctor. Kean had organized ice cream to be waiting for us.
At after we finished our long kinda hot hike and it was so sweet like it was like it helped me to understand what a student professor relationship looks like. It's money and it's that.
That's awesome, I love Doctor King.
Yeah, he's the best, uhm?
It's hard to decide on my story, but I think one of my favorite, I guess quintessential swanee moments pre has a lot of high-energy outdoors news to it, but there's one night where we have a big bonfire. And like I said, different pre families kind of travel in packs and maybe your pre families will bump into each other. Do hike together or something like that. But the bonfire night everybody comes together all the pre families. There's also text staff where they're not a pre mom or pre dad but they helped lead hikes will help.
Keeping anything and there there, um? And then the directores of S appear there and everything that will program.
And they'll do different little skits.
Which are pretty funny to watch. Your pre family will put together skit so be ready for that. You don't have to participate.
But it just like it was such a Swanee community moment. And when I look back on it, that's kind of.
I think the main draw that I have towards somebody still is the community that has. So thinking about sitting around that giant bonfire and watching people do really goofy skits. And like really funny outfits and we had a professor who came up and he played guitar like a little acoustic guitar is saying.
I think that was probably one of my favorite remembers.
Mr. Sweet dad. Like even even the like, not really have any experience with pre have heard so much about.
FYP also has good bonfires, actually did it.
It's OK either way. You'll get bonfire.
Wonderful story is now we're going to invite running Castle back on screen and we're going to start the Q&A so for all of you. Listening feel free to send in your questions to the first one. We had a little while ago. Ryan could you just confirm so Emily asked? Where do you register for praying FYP do you just want to confirm about that? Certainly that's a great question and again. Those registrations will open April 15th for any student who is already placed the enrollment deposit.
Camilla Kalthoff
06:39:38 PM
does FYP only last those first 10 days or does it bleed into the rest of the semester
And that will be on your on your enrollment checklist, which is your applicant status page. So those forms will auto magically appear at some point on April 15th, and you'll be able to log in now. Something I do want to say is you have until May 1st to place your enrollment deposit, so some of you might not have decided. By April 15th. I don't want you to worry. These programs haven't haven't filled up in the first few days.
So I don't want to give you the impression that if you, if you wait until May 1st that you won't have a spot, you'll very very likely still have a spot. If you do wait until May 1st, but we sure would love you to commit sooner than that if you know this one is we want to be.
Our next question, coming in I guess maybe Ben you can take this one is so Kimmel asked as FYP only lasts first 10 days or does it continue into the rest of this semester? So you want to touch on that. So the major difference between FP and pre is that FYP is actually a class and it does last into the semester.
Cassidy Martin
06:40:38 PM
Keep those great questions coming!
So it you're gonna have four classes your first semester, um, an FYP would be one of them. You just happen to start at 10 days early, and you spend multiple hours a day like covering the coursework so you actually finish it earlier than all your other classes. Your finals about a month earlier than all your other finals, which leaves you with three finals for your first experience with college finals. and I know, like.
I went through this experience in December of my first set of Swanee Finals, and I can't tell you how grateful I was to only like had to deal with three. Uhm, I think that's one of the greatest benefits of FYP is it takes some of the pressure off on your first semester. Once it ends, so it is a class you will get a grade for a, but it's it's. It's a super worthwhile, meaningful course that help you connect with campus and the people that live here.
Chris LeBlanc
06:41:40 PM
What's the average amount of students who attend FYP?
So we just got another question come in and so the question is, what's the average amount of students who attend FYP? So maybe for both of them, how many students, right? I don't know if you have the numbers exactly, but how many? How many students go to each program?
Brianna Howell
06:41:53 PM
Can you attend FYP and PRE?
And so pre orientation is just over 200 students.
Cassidy Martin
06:42:11 PM
Brianna, you will have to choose one program. They do conflict with each other, so you are only able to do one.
Find the right slide again. It's approximately 125 students, so when you think about FYP when you think about pre when you think about fall athletes, most students do move in early and so I do encourage you to look at one of those programs so you can come in a little bit early and get to know the place. Get to know people.
Silas McClung
06:42:23 PM
Could you expand on what the coursework looks like for FYP?
In those early days, yeah 100% makes a huge difference to already have connections on campus once regular school starts.
So our next question is, could you expand on what the coursework looks like for FY piece? Maybe an overview of the types of classes you might have available to you.
That's how I'm interpreting that question. I'm I'm sorry I messed up your question, so I'll generalize a lot here, because as you can see in the PowerPoint, it's a very diverse set of classes. I think there's something for everyone. I'll talk more about like my experience with the ecology of place class. Basically, what it looks like the first 10 days are. You will come in with.
Um assigned reading that you have completed and everyone covers that basically pretty early, and then your professor begins assigning.
Ratings for each day of class and there are readings for every morning. There's a lecture done by one of the professors. Answer is about 10 sections in about 10 days of pre. You get to hear a lecture from pretty much every professor that does FYP.
So every day and most of this, uhm, this content has to do with Sony's history or things relating to Swanee culture. So the the first set of course work is about getting to know campus, which is a super interesting thing to cover in a class. And then after that you really get into the subjects of your section. So mine was ecology of place. So we discussed how we should eat, what homes should look like and can look like.
It was. It was a very personally moving a man, life changing experience like the readings that we covered in the class discussions. We had an once you get into the semester you meet once a week for a couple hours, so that's kind of the way the class functions after after school starts.
Lovely, so we're in a bit of a Lola question low so listeners if you have anything else you're curious about, definitely send those into US.
Wait, we can we can give you a moment to kind of brainstorm those questions you see if anything inspires you.
Or our panelists might have just been so fabulous that they covered everything you could possibly want to know about enrolling. It's funny and these these wonderful orientation programs we offer.
Uhm, I know it's something that I struggled with was deciding between pre and FIP 'cause they're both so great. So I think maybe Sophie and I can contribute a little bit on that topic, but do you? Do you have an idea of what who would fit best for pre?
Yeah, um, well I I'm a tour guide here in kind of what I always. The main points that I hit uhm.
All the international students do FYP, so that's a good way to meet people from further away places. The Free is really sorry. Do FBI said it would be great.
So like in these people are really good way to get your foot in the outdoor program is pre because it's put on by the outdoor program.
So those are two things to kind of. Keep your eye on if you anticipate having really hard courses, everything can be good. Yes, 100% free is a good way to just jump in and bomb with everybody right away 'cause you're doing a lot of crazy things of logic. Raise people, yeah.
Brianna Howell
06:46:07 PM
Go more in depth w Hippocrates fellowship?
Yeah I, I can definitely go off of what you said. The student adding program that soapy is such a great resource for when you're outside of class.

So most of my time is spent outside here and like that's not. That's not everyone's experience, but getting to know the people in that office.
Is like such a valuable thing, and that's so great.
And like the social aspect of pre is wonderful.
I I'm I'm definitely, UM, super passionate about FYP would definitely say that if you're if you're kind of.
Concerned about your transition into college, it's definitely the smoothest softest transition home. If you're concerned about housing, I think it's a great way to get great housing with great people.
And I would say that it's also.
Um, if you, if you are very.
Um, curious person. As far as like you really want to understand like.
The culture around Swanee and um, like the history of the place, then I think I think it's the best fit for you then.
Silas McClung
06:47:34 PM
If one does not already read on a regular basis, how many hours a day would you recommend reading to prepare for FYP/Sewanee?
So then this is kind of a a question that is related to what you were just saying. The question is, you know. So if one does not read on a regular basis, how much might you suggest preparing for coming into FY it for FIP?
Thomas Hatley
06:47:43 PM
What’s the optimal choice of electronic to use for school work. Is it Chromebook, Mac, or iPad??
Or it's funny in general? OK, yeah, yeah, I would say that if you're not a big reader, I'm reading is a skill and very important in higher education. I would definitely recommend spending this summer like when you don't really have anything else going on. Working on that skill and what that means is like finding books that you want to read and then just like crashing through them. and I think I think one of the benefits of FYP is you're going to on your course selection sheet.
Wi-Fi peas it's gonna come out come you pick from your top three choices of like courses and you're probably going to get one of your top three. So the course you take the section you get in is probably going your passion about. So reading getting your readings done was fairly easy for me because I really cared about what we were talking about. So I would say, like that's my advice as far as.
Yeah, I think that leads into another of the differences is preen. FYP 2 is that create you kind of know what you're going to get. It's going to be a camping experience outdoors. Definitely feels like summer camp.
FYP it changes a lot depending on what course. Yeah yeah I would add that if before you start college.
You don't wanna do College Dupree. I think I think it's good.
Yeah, like it and that's totally fine. You know. So nice for everybody.
And they got that something to inform your decision.
So it was our next question is just kind of a more general student life question. I guess this is a personal preference. That's how I'm going to interpret interpret this Thomas. But what's the choice of electronic to use for school work? Is it a laptop and iPad, a Chromebook? What do you guys personally use and what other students use?
Emily Johnson
06:49:32 PM
Is your room key used in other areas of campus, such as the dining hall or book store?
Hum, I typically see laptops. Yeah, I've seen the rare person that doesn't seem to have anything, and they'll be in the 80s.
Nhu Nguyen Phuc
06:49:46 PM
When is the deadline to submit the documents regarding graduating in high school, such as the graduation certificate, etc.?
You don't need. You don't have to. You don't have to. Our library has like a fool like array like Mac computers. Just being a library lot. Yeah which is an option I've seen I pass but I don't see them a lot. I definitely have some peers I'm premed and some of my peers take their iPad within everywhere, do everything on it, 'cause you take notes and they are available everywhere, yeah?
Like that, that's a very good option. Yeah, I'm personally like completely connected to my Mac book. I do everything on my Mac book.
Cassidy Martin
06:50:17 PM
Nhu, please submit your graduation certificate to us as soon as you have it.
Biggest investment of my life and like it's literally like my day revolves around it. Basically just because of the nature of like how.
Technologically advanced swannies. I guess you know, like we do over over coursework. Yeah, digitally save the trees.
So our next question is, I think just a general student question again, is your room key used for other things on campus? Like how do you get into the dining Hall or the bookstore? And maybe this would be a good opportunity for you to talk about pucks and how those kind of work as well.
Explain that you know I'm just mentioning them right.
Silas McClung
06:51:02 PM
Will the roommate you are assigned with during FYP carry over into the semester?
OK, well the nice thing. The nice thing in the bad thing about your student ID is it does everything for you, so don't lose it.
But the nice part is you can swipe into Fowler as many times as you want every day.
Cassidy Martin
06:51:17 PM
Silas, yes it will be the same roommate.
Aashi Seth
06:51:20 PM
So the PRE is paid and is the FYP Too?
Then you can swipe into clear which is our dining Hall. Yes, many times you want every day actually. 99 Mills.
So if you're eating more than that, you're out of luck. My roommate night, like added that up one time, and it's like you have to go every five minutes. Yeah, I mean something.
Yeah, you can get printing with that student ID. Yeah, um Publix around there, which we can talk about just to set. There's one more right. I feel like there's something In this sense.
With the outdoor the residence Hall.
Yeah, getting into residence door and there's certain hours that you can get in your own residence storm. Whenever obviously but certain hours, other Peoples Residence Hall to be close to you like the middle of the night, you can't get into other peoples residence halls from 10 at night to 8 in the morning. And that's just for security reasons. Yeah, hope you feel safe.
Cassidy Martin
06:52:20 PM
Aashmin, yes there is a cost for both programs. FYP is around $60 dollars for the cost for books and supplies you might need. The cost of PRE is $260 dollars but we do have financial aid available for both programs.
Yeah, so covered intuition. Your ID comes with $150 every semester to be used in dining locations other than the clerk and what that means is the coffee house on campus. Sterlings the Swanee Tiger pub, which is our like late night dining option and the cafe in the library and buys everything you want like the cafe food.
The, UM, the cough. All the coffee drink I know people who blew through their whole lot in it on like expensive coffee drinks and like the first three weeks. So yeah, can I throw in a pro tip on the ID picture I purposely like during my problems. I know like that's a big thing for seniors or was from last year I got my I got my like face shot done in my prom. Tux and it's a great picture for idea. Raise eyebrows from professors under command.
Oh, and those ID pictures don't go away. Have them all four years so pick.
I was wearing a pink tuxedo, so yeah, so I'm going to be there for next four years.
Camilla Kalthoff
06:53:37 PM
do Sewanee classes use more google based programs like docs and sheets, or Microsoft programs like word and excel?
I'm not sure if you guys know the answer to this, but it's. Do swimming classes use more Google based programs or Microsoft programs? Or does it depend on the professor? I'm not sure if you know, but I thought I'd pass it along.
So the main interaction between students, professors likely going to blackboard. Some professors don't use a lot of Technology. I have one class I was just lectured most of the grades were just tests, so like there's really any technological aspect between us, but.
Camilla Kalthoff
06:54:03 PM
Kind of random, but what cellular services work at Sewanee?
Professors use classroom. I don't really have any professors that use anything really to Microsoft, but I've seen Google trash. You're driving blackboard in the blackboard, just like you'll get username and password for it. And it's it's easy. It's the same as your power points.
That you activate and then there's compatibility with your Google Drive. You can upload documents and slides, have been prepared through a Microsoft platform so.
Over your preferences. In most situations you're going to be just fine. Professors care a lot about the Accessibility of the course work, and they will cater to you in your like whatever platform you decide to use.
Ryan Stafford
06:54:49 PM
Are there any suggested items to bring to your dorm room?
So our next question is, are there any suggested items to bring to your dorm room? So, coming, ISM.
Should you bring great question what is provided to you when you get a job? Maybe also yeah.
Cassidy Martin
06:55:12 PM
Camilla, AT&T works best on campus, but we are getting a Verizon tower soon. We also have campus wide wifi which is accessible all across campus.
I would I. I'm a big fan of maybe maybe this goes for more of.
Then when gender demographic um, decorate your room like personalize it, make it yours. When you come into your room, the first day. Facilities management, which take care of our campus are going to leave you things you can safely Mount on the wall. Like, um, types of putty and types of tape and like put your posters up on the wall. Bring crazy like bedclothes like really make a root beer is that that's what I would say.
Yeah, little fairy lights fairy lights are the move for everyone. Yes, as far as I guess, like practicality goes, I came from Oregon which was far away. Uhm so I like flew down with my dad, um.
Cassidy Martin
06:56:06 PM
https://new.sewanee.edu/campus-life/living/residential-life/incoming-students/
You don't have to bring a lot. I learned. I just brought clothes and then I think we bought bedsheets here and I just accumulated things.
It's really fun to print off pictures. There's a CVS like 10 minutes away. You could print out pictures from your home sales or whatever, but if you're worried about like transporting things, that's not too big issue. They have most of things we'd like trash bags, and escaped.
Cassidy Martin
06:56:27 PM
This is the link to our incoming student page, with lots of tips about moving in, packing, and becoming a Sewanee student!
Probably yeah, and if you are coming from farther away, you can have items shipped here. Yeah yeah. As a matter of fact I work with students from the West Coast, California or the West coast and one of the students I worked with the admission process. She and her family just ship things to my house and orientation. They came and picked it all up. These boxes just kept appearing. Yeah, how are you going to fit all that into your husband? So that says I'm still not sure how she did that.
Up here, so make friends with your admission round. Maybe you can ship stuff to his or her house that is.
Definitely you need an umbrella, like if nothing else comes with an umbrella.
Walking campus and it took me awhile to find what they like. Get one so would recommend as a freshman coming in with one.

It gets a lot colder than ice.
It takes a while to get there though, so you have time to figure that out. We can go home for Thanksgiving.
So we have these last two questions that I'm seeing, and let's answer those. And then if those of you if you do have further questions, feel free to reach out to Ryan or myself and we can pass it along to our lovely student volunteers if need be. So we'll start with.
Silas McClung
06:57:55 PM
What kind of attitude/mindset should you come into FYP/PRE/Sewanee with?
We'll start with this one. Then we're going to go to the more more varied question so this one is what kind of attitude or mindset should you come into FIP? Or pre with some kind of? What mindset should be here as well as you get there? This again question, yeah?
I'll specify mentors pre I guess, but it's the same for either one. If you like. Just like be ready to jump in. Just have a positive attitude.
Nhu Nguyen Phuc
06:58:15 PM
If you can went back to your freshman year, what would you do or change?
I remember being very scared as a freshman to come here. I felt like I wouldn't fit in. I had all those worries, um, and then everyone just kind of embraces you. 'cause we're also excited to have new students to meet you guys.
So just be positive about it. Don't be worried. Have a very good um hands in attitude.
Everyone feels pretty much the exact same way you do. Everyone's a little bit a little bit anxious. Little bit concerned there's so many names to learn, and if you're just aware of that, I think that are really, really helped. You swannies really social campus like you're going to know a majority of campus very quickly, so I just beyond beyond your game with learning names like connecting with people like that. That's my advice and just be aware that everyone is going through the same adjustment.
Come family weekend, it's going to feel like home. You know. It happens quick and then your then your your your home basically.
And parents watching tonight. There will be that moment at some point pretty early when your child will refer to this place is home. Yeah, it and I hear that's hard. My oldest is just a junior in high school right now, but they'll be that moment in fall semester. It may be fall break. It maybe Thanksgiving and your child will say I'm headed home and I think that's going to hurt just a little bit. But find joy in that because that means that your student has found his or her place.
Yeah, so our last question, which I think is a really great way to end, is if you went back to my goodness. Excuse me if you went back to your freshman year, what would you change?
All right, Sophie go first.
You know, I don't know that answer. I like my freshman year like it's hard, it's.
I think some people say that software is harder. I think software is easier 'cause you get along great with the community so you feel comfortable.
But it was just so exciting the meeting. So many people, I think if anything it was just just be more open and just being more sign up for more of those little clubs and dive into more communities but.
I think it was good. I think I've come up with.
So something that's really cool about college is that.
Freshmen and seniors aren't nearly as different as freshmen and seniors in high school and like about something you definitely keep in mind if I do something different with my first semester because I'm a freshman, um, I would try the make connections with my senior friends that I have now way earlier. 'cause now, like you know, I'm really, really have like strong bonds with these people, but they are graduating soon. And if I realize sooner that there's not much difference between like.
1718 year old and like 2122 year olds like so. I would definitely recommend just immediately just disregarding uhm what class people are in. Just make friends you know and connect with people.
It is the senior is, uhm, you only get him for two semesters and then you get you get a different different group of people.
May I add now for me that goes back to 1994 one.
But I I would have got involved sooner. I didn't go to Swanee so I I I went to a much much bigger place, so much less personal place. And so I live vicariously through the students at this small liberal arts residential environment. So I would have gotten involved sooner. I did something that I think many college students think about that first semester. I was filling out transfer applications to transfer in January and I was set to.
Change schools, but I started getting involved a little bit more and I started feeling at home a little bit. Now students and parents.
We talk about college is being these incredible for years. We say bet some of the best years of your life. It's so much fun. It's such a great experience and it is. But and I talked to many students who I've worked with the admission process. I talked to them that first semester and sometimes are struggling and they sometimes think.
I've been told this is supposed to be the best years of my of my life.
But I might be struggling to find friends I might be struggling to find my connection.
You're not alone in that situation, so see it out. Go talk to someone, whether it be your admission representative or maybe it's your academic advisor. Or maybe you walk into the Swanee Career Center, which is one of the warmest offices on campus outside the admission office.
Yeah, and just walk in and say I'm Ben, I'm Sophie, I'm Ryan. This is my first year here. Tell me what you do here. Yeah they will love that and and so introduce yourself to people and if you do find yourself struggling one. No you're not alone and to talk to someone about that so you can help facilitate those connections.
So I think that is all the questions we have time for any of you have any final parting thoughts before we sign up for our viewers?
It's super appropriate to be very, very excited.
Yeah, I 2nd that. We're excited to see you guys. Maybe yeah, I think both of us this year will be involved with pre so maybe that's why is your decision.
Cassidy Martin
