Hi, I'm Garrett Parker, from Rossville, GA.
Good evening friends. It's great to see you all are great for you to see me tonight. I can't see your face is I wish I could will see them on the mountain soon but my name is Ryan Castle an I will be your host tonight for the making it your domain enrollment 101 all the items that you need to do to prepare for a successful entry into Swanee as they as the evening goes on.
I will be. I will be moderating the chat as well, so you can type what you want in there, and I will approve those messages as I get to them. I sure do appreciate everyone introducing themselves. I love the geographic representation that we have tonight. I've seen some students from other countries, West Coast, East Coast, Midwest students in the South, and that's just what you can expect as Aswani student. Being part of this community, I will be adding some polls in this evening. So one pole of added is.
An interactive poll of who's watching tonight or you a student. Are you a parent or Guardian? Or maybe a little sister, or a grandparent and aunt and uncle? So take a look at that pole and you can click that, whoever, whoever you are representing tonight. Now what can we expect together in our time? We will take a look at some of the enrollment checklist items that are available now. We will preview some checklist items that you can expect to roll onto your status page.

Spencer Doerr
07:05:28 PM
Hi, I'm Spencer Doerr from Woodberry Forest, Va!
In the coming weeks, we will go into a little bit of information about some of the early and optional programs that you might consider and then I'll do my best to answer what questions remain. So with that, we will go ahead and get started. Oh, I see a couple more students, Spencer hey there, good to see you there from Virginia so I get you on the list so others can see you.
So let's look and see what's available right now, and this is for students who have placed the enrollment deposit. And So what? Checklist items are there and where you access this, it is on your applicant status page and what you can see there is.
What happens is your admission checklist. It converts to your enrollment checklist. So for some of you have deposited, I was checking your records tonight. I can see that you have already logged on there and you have gotten started.
Why we why we do this? First glance here I'm gonna add another poll. I would also love to see who's with us tonight and where you are in your college selection process. So give me just a moment I'll get these selections added.
I saw one of your comment. You love the music selection. We made a social distancing playlist here. Some of us contributed some of our some favorite songs to that represent this time and this time that we're going through.
So we thought that don't stand so close to me with the most appropriate for this evening.
OK, here we go. Just got this poll at it. Where are you in your college search process? I've already submitted my enrollment deposit. I will be submitted. My enrollment deposit still considering my options or not attending. I just like webinars.
Either one I'm glad you're here and those of you who will be submitting your enrollment deposit.
24 went out tonight, so maybe later I'll give you my phone. You can call in. You can be a special guest on our on tonight's webinar. If you place that enrollment deposit.
Some of the first items that you'll see on your own enrollment checklist and these will start appearing within about three days after you place your enrollment deposit. Because what happens is we get your commitment in the system and then our our IT staff. They will create your username and your passwords and all those login credentials and we call it your Swanee Network ID, sometimes also called your Swanee username and that will be the first checklist item where you'll need to start and that is due May 8th and what that is. It's the first part of your.
Just wanna email address you use this for a whole host of different login platforms on campus. Whether it be your email, a platform we have called Banner Self Service, a program through our Career Center, the student account center, your residential life account. So start at the Swine Network ID or Swanee username as it might be presented and that's the one that's do before May 8th if you try to start with some of the others, you're going to run into a wall because you need that initial Swanee Username Swanee Network ID.
Ollie Sewanee
07:08:53 PM
Hi, my name is Ollie!!!
Nadia Hobeika
07:08:54 PM
I'm Nadia from Nashville, TN
Those credentials in order to progress on one that's really exciting. At least I think it's exciting is activating your Swanee email address. So once you have deposited you can start using that.
Spencer Doerr
07:08:55 PM
I'm from San Antonio but go to Woodberry. It's an all-boys boarding school.
And began telling all your friends about how you're going to Swanee and emailing from that.
Something I will tell you is that this is Google based. It has a swanee.edu suffix, but the platform is Google and so when you log in initially it will look like you're logging into a Google account. Now what this means is that some of the activities some of the items that you'll do later on are essentially Google forms and we will require that your computer be logged into yourswanee.edu account to do that. So if you have, if you later on you have one of those forms and it's saying You can't.
Access it, make sure you log out of your personal Gmail account and log in with your swanee.edu account.
Now another item that is due May 11th and that is an item called your academic inventory and this is one of the introductions into preparing a strong academic schedule for you. That's going to fit some of your goals. An also align with how will be coming in to Swanee and some of your background.
This could lead to some online placement exams. So for example some of the language exams we have, Spanish, French, German, Russian, Italian, Chinese, Arabic, Latin, Greek, all those different languages. If you've had experience in those, we want you to take a language placement exam. Now, that doesn't mean that you will be taking that language again. You will take a language, but it doesn't have to be the one with which you started. But still, we like you to have a placement.
Coming in. So for example, let's say you've taken French throughout high school and you think I'm going to change pass. I'm going to go a different direction. I'm going to take German. That was my wife's major at Swanee German.
Perhaps you'll get into the first semester of German and you may think, oh, this is great, but I really miss my French. You'll still have that French placement in your back pocket to enter into that level, so don't be alarmed if you see a placement exam and you don't want to take that place that language you will not necessarily have to, but we do want to take you to take that exam. There will be some questions about calculus, about chemistry. And again, this does not mean that you're taking calculus. It does not mean you're taking chemistry, but should you request those down the road?
We want our faculty to have been able to put you into the proper placement based upon your history, so answer those as best you can. There's certainly not placement questions or quiz questions you might say is just about your background in those areas. Also, on the academic inventory, there are questions about your background with academic rigor and what I mean by that is you'll be asked about coursework that could potentially lead to college credit.
And what do I mean by that? I mean AP coursework, IB, coursework, Cambridge, a level or dual enrollment. So you will list if you've taken any of those areas and then provide a summary of what you have taken, and then what we do with that information is we provide that to our registrar's office, and that's The Office who reviews what you submit, reviews the different different AP scores or your dual enrollment credits.
And perhaps will come in with those credits. So definitely if you're take dual enrollment, if you take a pee, any of those exams or those final grades, those need to go to our registrar's office. So this summer that placement can be be coordinated.
So other checklist items available now contact and communication. This is not as exciting as using your swanee email, but it is very important. It allows you to submit emergency contact information. It also allows you to submit if there are other languages spoken in the home. So for example, if there was an emergency situation and we would, someone here would have to contact family member at home is there is a language other than English that is used primarily.
So a contact in communication. Not the most exciting but definitely important one that is very exciting. and I bet I get one question a day from students about when is the residential life form? When is the living form going to be ready? And it will be soon. It will be in the coming weeks. What's going on right now with our residential life office? Is there doing their best focuses on coordinating the room? Draw for current students and so after that in the coming weeks, that living form will be posted.
And this is used by the residential life staff to match you with a roommate. There's other important info.
Summation included with that some of it is very practical. Information like Are you a morning person? Are you an evening person are you? Are you neat and tidy or do you like things a little cluttered and messy? Do you perceive yourself studying in the wrist install room or in the library? Or where might you be students? I urge you and parents I know there are some parents who are in there. 'cause I saw the whole question earlier. This is so important for the students to do.
Really, all of these should be student driven, but if parents if you're helping at all with anything, make sure your hands are off this one because students, well, how do you think your parents are going to ask that question about how tidy you're going to keep your room? Yeah, they're going to, of course, say you're going to keep it neat and tidy there. Of course, going to say you're a morning person, so make sure that you are answering that. Honestly, students now something else I want to say about housing is that this is going to seem like the longest wait for you.
Meredith Tjepkema
07:15:07 PM
Hi I'm Meredith and I'm from Atlanta!
Housing assignments including roommate assignments, roommate matches. They're not made and released until early August, so students be patient with this. Real people are looking at your submissions and they're the ones deciding who to match you as a roommate. And so if you wanted a computer to match you.
Connie Tapia
07:15:36 PM
Hi I'm Connie and I'm from Montgomery, AL!
You didn't want a real person giving you the attention and giving your information the attention that it needs. You probably wouldn't be choosing Swanee, so just keep that in mind. Keep that personal touch at the top of your head as you are getting through July and you're getting anxious about who your roommate might be. Those all do come out in early August. Now a checklist item. This one actually might be posted now is that that's your photo submission for your student ID. We do not want you to have to come to orientation and stand in some long line at the ID office.
When you come to check in, We want your ID to be ready for you, and so that's one less thing you have to do. Whenever you do come for orientation. The On this checklist item, the parameters are there. So for example, you should be the only one in the photo. If there's a group photo, we can't put a group on the photo ID. If your face is to the side or something like that, we can't. We can't do that. You're fat. You should be faced forward. So follow those parameters and you'll be all set and your photo ID will be ready for you.
Whenever you arrive on campus.
Other University checklist items coming up. One is the University Wellness form and we expect this one to be released within the next 2 weeks. Please do start this soon if there are significant incomplete components to your health form, it could delay you moving in an on move in day. You may have to pay a visit to the Wellness Center instead of moving right into your residence Hall, and no one that's not a goal of anyone, so we want this to be as smooth as possible.
We do have some consideration, so we're, as I mentioned earlier, we are. We all know we're living in a time that none of us have experienced before, and so there will be accommodations made due to Corona virus issues. We recognize you may not be able to get into your doctor's office between now and some point in the summer for your physical exam, or to access those vaccinations. So we want you to submit what you can and work with our Wellness Center.
Who they have an incredible student centered, caring staff. So stay in communication with them and they will stay in communication with you. But this this checklist item will be posted soon and the goal for that is due July 15th. Again, there will be certainly flexibility with that because of the coronavirus in which through which were living other future checklist items we have your summer reading and reflection all all members of the Swanee community.
You and all your classmates. You will read the same book over the summer and you'll offer the same reflections and those reflections will be used through the orientation process.
And they'll be read by your advisor, so make sure you spend a lot of good time on those, so you can expect that summer reading to be released in the coming weeks. There's a program called handshake. One of the just most incredible caring offices on campus called are Swanee Career Center Ann. This is they have a great staff and they have a wonderful system, a platform for you to use called handshake. That is where you'll go to look up internship information. That's where.
Harrison Lowery
07:18:57 PM
Hello Deven Wright from Birmingham Al
Jobs will be posted your senior year. It'll be. It'll be where work study positions are posted later this summer. So handshake is a great great program and you'll be introduced to that later this summer. Many of you who were offered loans as part of your financial aid package, you can accept those or you don't have to accept those. We you certainly aren't required to take out a student loan and you will acknowledge that on your loan request or acceptance form.
And that is actually posted now on deposited student checklist. and I know some of you have submitted those already so we sure appreciate that. I referenced work study earlier and so for those of you who have been offered work study as part of a position on campus, that will be that will be coming out later this summer.
Molly Jirgal
07:19:55 PM
how much say do we have over our first semester schedule?
Hum in August. Your car and bike registration. We let you do that online beforehand. So again, it's one less thing you have to do whenever you come to do Orient whenever you're here for orientation right before school starts, and then those of you who are varsity athletes. There are some supplemental health forms, and those will be posted along with the healthy general health forms and within the next couple of weeks.
Now, one question that we that we always get and it looks like Molly has asked this question tonight, which is a great one.
Huh? How much say do we have in our first semester schedule and and I'll give you a bit of an overview of courses at Swanee. The standard is that also only students will take 4 classes each semester, and your first 4 classes will be prepared for you apon arrival. Now you definitely have a say in that, and in late May what we will post is a checklist item called the course selection form.
On this you will last 12 classes. We want you to list 4 classes that are has content that would be new and intriguing to you. We want you to list 4 courses in which you have confidence in good experience and then other for other courses that might be of interest to you and in most all situations, student schedules those classes you have are come from those 12 classes that you that you request.
And that's due in late June, but I do recommend you do that as soon as it's posted or or soon after that. So we do our best to tailor the schedule that will fit with your interest in your experience in your shrinks.
Now parents, this could be an area where you, I first see you jumping in again. Keep your hands off of the living in residential life form, but the student account center. This is a place where parents typically get involved. This checklist item, called the access your student account center or access to your bill will be available in early June and then it will be on your checklist, of course, but it will link you to a sitecalledswanee.ford.com.
And students, you guessed it, you're going to log in using your Swanee username, credentials. Those credentials I talked about earlier.
Students, the first thing you need to do with this is you need to grant your parents or guardians access.
And yes, I listed that twice for dramatic emphasis. Students grant your parents and Guardians access to your student account center. That way they can get in there and they can be the ones to set up the payment plan. They can pay that Bill and that fall semester bill is due July 31st and similar to health forms. If this payment is not complete, it is. It could present an issue. You might have to visit the student accounts office on moving day.
Again, that's not exciting for anyone. You're ready to move into your residence Hall. You don't want to be visiting the student account center, even though they're wonderful people. You need to get on about your business and move into your residence Hall, so make sure that your payment plan is set up or your bill is paid in full by July 31st.
Now let's talk about some early programs that we have one, and these are optional, but we have one great program called Finding your place and registration for this will open April 15th unless status page that will be posted for any student who has placed the enrollment deposit by that date. It's around 125 students will can participate in Finding your place and with this when you move in 10 days early, so you will move in Wednesday August 12th Ann.
Move right into your residence Hall room so you don't have to have a temporary room for awhile and what you'll do is you'll start one of your courses and for those 10 days, that one course will be your core area focus.
An and what happens is when classes begin, the traditional schedule begins around the 26th of August. In that ballpark, you'll add three classes. Now, FYP will continue to me, but it will be. It will meet less regularly, and but what what happens is finding your place because it starts early. It ends earlier in the semester, so it might end around some point in November and so what's nice about this is that you'll go into your first final exam period is.
As a college student with only three classes to worry about instead of the traditional, for now, I must say that the the.
Finding your place. It does conflict with some of our preseason fall athlete athletic programs, football field hockey, soccer, and volleyball. So if you are an athlete in one of those sports, I regret to say you will not be able to do finding your place.
Now I know there have been some questions about finding your place and what courses there are, and these were just released about two or three days ago, so we're really exciting. Excited to share your some of the first people to see these and so the common theme amongst all of these classes is this place. This is a setting where we say place matters this domain on which were set these 13,000 acres. It is a It is a setting where.
Hum it, it helps make this makes you who you are here and so so the focus of finding your place is this campus.
The Cumberland Plateau. The Greater Appalachian region, and so. While there are different disciplines with these different classes, the common theme amongst all these is this place, so you will definitely have time with your own section. You will also have.
Molly Jirgal
07:25:41 PM
is there a way to see what GenEds the FYP courses fulfill?
Have larger plenary sessions with all 120. Five of the FP students and Molly is asked. Another good question. Is there a way to see what general education expectations the FYP courses fulfill? Yeah, I know, I do know that is available each each one of these does fulfill a general education requirement, and that's something that is taken into account. So whenever you're selecting are putting your request in for these classes are faculty members who over the summer time will.
Create your schedule. They will be looking to see which which FIP course you've requested, and make sure that aligns with the general distribution expectations. With that course work, but I do know in our course catalog you will be able to see which Gen Ed area that covers.
Maya Dighe
07:26:21 PM
How do you select which FYP course you go to?
Uh, my has asked how do you select which FIP course you go to? On April 15th? The registration form. What you will do is you will rank your top five courses.
Or you may say I don't have a preference. I all of these look great and I think they all do look great, but you will have the ability to rank them and most all situations students get their some of their top ranked courses for FYP and again those open that opens on April 15th. One thing I do want to say, I think I missed this bullet point earlier. The cost for FY pee outside of the books that for the program and that cost $60.00. There is no additional cost.
Now, if if that is a hardship, you can indicate on the registration form, you can indicate a such and it possible that you could get a waiver for that $60.00. So do not let the financial peace be an obstacle for you in if you really want to choose FYP or pre pre orientation is an alternate program, you cannot do both. They do overlap with their time. So if you're coming in early and want to do one of these programs, you will have to choose one.
Over the other, and that's run by an office on campus called the Swanee outing program and the like, with the with the Swanee outing program. Excuse me, it opens on April 15th.
And with that one you will choose the different activities that you would like to be apart of. Maybe the different options are maybe caving or hiking or canoeing. There's usually a community service element and you'll indicate these different preferences on your registration form. And with this you'll be able to say what kinds of activities you would like to do, or you get to stay. This sorts of activities that you don't want to do, and so for me, if I was doing it.
Catherine Collett
07:28:50 PM
Does it not conflict with cross country?
I would I would not find me in a cave. I would put caving as one of my options that I just not comfortable doing and so it is a three day at three day experience completely outdoors, great team building activities. It's a really great introduction to the University and all of this domain has to offer. We've had a couple of questions come in Catherine's asked does this conflict? Does it not conflict with cross country? We have confirmed with a cross country coach an coaches.
Molly Jirgal
07:29:08 PM
how fast do these programs fill up?
Open to the the incoming recruits doing one of these programs so if you're a cross-country student you will be able to do pre or FYP and Molly has asked how fast do these programs fill up and that's a question that that sometimes comes up. They are limited for example, pre is around 210 students. I said FIP was 125. It opens April 15th, but of course, you.
We have until May 1st to place your enrollment deposit. I can tell you these in the last few years these programs have not filled up in the last in the first couple of weeks, so those of you who aren't in a position to make your enrollment deposit until May 1st, I sure don't expect these programs to be filled by the time you deposit. They are limited, of course, but I do not expect it to be filled and so I am going to add a new poll here an I am just curious to see what.
Early or optional program you might be interested in attending, so just give me another moment here. So if you have questions you can start, you can start typing those.
Checking to see how fast I can type.
See what's on your minds?
See some FYP there a little bit of pre.
I'll pray, oh, this is like one of those Carnival Games where you see which horse gets to the right the fastest FYP
Seems to be the winner tonight, not that there are winners and losers. These are both incredible programs.
