Hi I'm Julie Thompson I am a sophomore here. I'm from Columbia. SC here on campus. I am an environment sustainability. Major and on the dance minor. I'm also a dance and theater fellow an I'm also a resident of the greenhouse, as well as a member of government sociation.
Hey guys, my name is Buck Allen of a junior from Darien, Connecticut. I'm a psychology major and with a business minor. I'm involved in several different organizations. I'm a resident at the house called the health Hut appear hold edgecator. I'm involved in Greek life, yeah, great. Thank you all so much for being here tonight. So to our viewers. You guys have the opportunity to type in questions and so we are going to definitely send those questions and questions in excuse me. But we're going to hold them mostly till the end, so we have a few prepared questions that our panelists are going to.
Ask and then I'll leave some time for your guys's questions at the end to start off can you tell me your favorite tradition on campus so here is finding we have tons of traditions and so can you all go through and tell me your absolute favorite one so Buck will start with you and go down the other would line the other way.
Um what is the most memorable traditions for me was signing the honor code as a freshman is just so great, so I come in with my freshman class all gathered together for the first time and sign the honor code kind of create a sense of community on campus with my class.
Taylor Baird
06:05:53 PM
Please submit questions that come to mind throughout and I will make sure to relay those to our panelists.
On mine is definitely being a member of the order of the gown because I got my brothers down and he graduated 2 years ago and so it has his initials on the back and a lot of his pins on the front and so it's just a little bit of like legacy and comfort that I find but also making my own path year 20.

Leave the gate so we're on we're on a plateau the campuses gated off generally all 13,000 acres of it and every time you leave the roof. You're supposed to you leave you leave the campus grounds were supposed to tap the roof of your car and take a little sweaty gardening, Angel with you there awesome. Thank you guys so much for sharing your favorite traditions. So we're going to start with a simple one. So here on campus. We have a lot of residence halls so could you guys talk about well a lot of questions to talk about rez life here in general?
And kind of how you found your room as a freshman. The roommate process. So how that set up as you were incoming students coming to Swanee.
Yeah, so uh when you're a freshman you don't choose your roommate coming in which actually really. Appreciate it so I didn't know anyone I didn't want to choose a random person. But you fill out a pretty extensive form. Rez life will match you with someone my roommate was also named Catherine the same spelling. So, we were the catherines and we got along great. We had an amazing time together if it doesn't workout that sometimes happens, but it's pretty easy to switch I have some friends, who had to switch roommates. But most everyone was really content with their freshman year roommate.
What are the things that we have freshmen? Do is we have them fill out a survey right before they come to school listing. You know what time they like to go to bed? What they want to use a group or whether it's more studying or socializing and different sorts of stuff like that. One of the funny parts on that survey is it asks you to name a song that you really like and for me. That was just really cool question to get I picked very basic one, I put the Star Wars theme song and the current will remain it worked out very well so remember that in mind for your reply.
Taylor Baird
06:08:18 PM
Any theme songs out there?
Yeah, mine was Beyoncé in my room, it was pretty fly.
I'm uh, yeah, yeah, no it's it's been awhile ago, I In addition to track and field. I'm also head head proxy here on campus. Proctors are equivalent to arres at other universities, so hit me up with any other questions later but.
Yeah, when R is don't get to choose rooms later on, but in my freshman Hall.
Bob Makazhu
06:09:03 PM
Hi Everyone. I am Bob Makazhu from Harare, Zimbabwe
That's not common, so anything can happen just keep that in mind, and I'm going to drop this part of the question to bucking Julia so could you guys talk about our theme and alternative housing and could you touch on the language houses as well even though I know you live in Italian? Yes yes OK perfect so Catherine as well. Could you guys touch on those kind of different houses that you live in sure so I've lived in the health? How the healthy hub for 2 years and I applied as a freshman. What theme houses usually do is they focus on some kind of.
Theme and they'll put together events discussions and workshops based around that theme so for the help but we do a lot of things with health Wellness. You know just healthy habits on campus and just leave. Those types of discussions, yeah, so I'm in the greenhouse, so that's focused on obviously environment sustainability, which is my major so this is my first year in the House and we actually just had an event today in collaboration with the help you had paper so papermaking so you're like recycling old paper and like making your own piece of paper to take home which is really cool.
So little things like that are just really unique to Swanee I. I feel like like especially like having a healthy Hutton at greenhouse as well as having a multitude of language houses. There are so many.
Erin Readling
06:10:29 PM
Hello! I’m Erin Readling from Davidson, North Carolina.
I really wish I could think about yeah, yeah, so I live in Italian house. There are 5 of us who live there were all Italian minors. A lot of us have studied abroad or planning to and thank you. Next semester and we do. Lots of fun events. Actually, this Saturday. We're having a karneval event will be painting Venetian masks and we're really excited about it. So it's really fun to get a group of people together have a common interest in a common goal. I've really liked living with these people so that's also thank you guys and we did have one more question come in.
When you fill out the registration form of are there exceptions free options on campus and you know if you're that something you want in your living situation? How you go about getting that so can one of you touch on that process. Anyone who wants to take questions gosh.
Short answer is that option. Yes, yes, there is, is it readily available. Yes, yes, it is.
You mentioned surveys earlier to match you with with roommates at survey is also taking into account when when placing you in different residential halls. So there are Hall particulars that are substance free as as as opposed to those that aren't.
Uh some other fun facts all these thing houses.
Taylor Baird
06:11:40 PM
Questions are coming in! I will add those in just a moment.
Uh with the exception of like 2 or 3 are also substance free so there's definitely that larger larger cultural thing happening in University offered housing, yeah, and That being said, like the substance free housing is awesome, but that doesn't mean that the houses that aren't substance 3 or like heavily substance. You know they're not like that. My freshman year. I lived in Hoffman, which is there residential Hall and it wasn't technically substance for you, but there was never an issue.
Actually, the room about right about yeah, yeah, we didn't have any issues with that. So it's not a big issue on campus. That's awesome great. Thank you so we're going to move into our next question. So pretty simple. What it does a typical Swanee weekend look like so you guys can enter this a couple of different ways describe what you did last weekend or just say some of some of the fun things that happen on the campus during the weekend. So, however, you want to take that go for it and tell us what you do with your weekend here.
I'll start up so I there's like 2 typical weekends. For me at least you know last weekend. I decided I was really tired after school work. So I sat in in my dorm invite some friends over and we watched a movie. In some food. But more typically a lot of students go out to different Greek houses on campus, with some music and dance. There's usually stuff theme houses and so people really like to meet up there.
I'm so students, like to get their work done just like right after the Smart Yeah.
Sometimes I actually do like to do a little Rd tripping and I was fresh when you do get to come with your car if you choose to and so I think that's really fun. One thing I do a lot is I Thrift Thrift shop, a lot and so sometimes I'll go to unclaimed baggage in Scottsboro and that's like a little less than an hour away so like sometimes people on tours will ask me like so you're in the middle of nowhere like like? How does that feel and so sometimes on weekends. I'll take advantage of like sometimes feeling a little a little crowded or a little whatever and so I'll just like.
Gotta take a little road trip and then I'll come back and I feel completely refreshed and ready to settle back in this morning before you guys go. Juliet will you explain? What the unclaimed baggage? Is we all know, but for some reason?
Actually, a location I think there are 2 in the country, but unclaimed baggage is where all of the unclaimed baggage from airports goes to and then all of those contents are sold so it's a lot of clothes and a lot of like computers, headphones, laptops, like there's just the coolest little finds that you can get there in the middle of Scotts Boro. It's just such a random stuff like place.
Yeah, yeah, they're always events going on, I mentioned we have the carnevali last weekend. The other language houses put together together and international fat Tuesday event so we have lots of fun things going on. I know this weekend. My story is taking a trip down to Chattanooga to go to the aquarium is February is half off for students so we're going to go down. There will have a good time, we have swing dance rehearsal, you know, lots of things are happening on the weekends definitely.
I do everything that they say.
What I will add is I'm a big sports watcher so I'll claim one of the many big screens that we have in campus weather being auditorium. Screen Aurora theater screen and I'll watch football, basketball, whatever whatever is going on. Because that is a perfect transition to my next question so for my athletes could you tell us a little bit about sports on campus. But with being an athlete and as a spectator and kind of the campus culture of being a Tiger in supporting your fellow Tigers.
So, whoever whoever wants to start on that one. I always feel like I'm kind of a fake athlete varsity a question. It's not your typical. We are athletes. We are, we have such a great team were very supportive. I will say the other teams are also incredibly supportive and I don't think that they are very often, but they are they really are so it's really fun to be. You know it come into Fowler in our question you're coming to Mcclurg and our dear and people be like Oh yeah, you know.
Treat us as actual athletes, it's really nice. Yeah.

Um one of the things that sense, about Swannies D3 school I was someone in high school who was heavily involved in sports and coming into Swanee know I was like OK. I want to play a little bit of sports for fun, so that could have been doing the rugby club just for a couple of weeks or I decided to try out track for just one semester. So you really get to be involved in sports. If you want to, but without being too stressed out.
Books in academics and beat the applet in sometime.

06:16:30 PM
What is the meal plan on campus?
That's great, so we do have a bunch of questions coming and currently about the food on campus so let's talk.
Ahmad Ijaz
06:16:32 PM
What are your reviews on the food and meal plans at Sewanee?
Mcclurg Anar dining plan and our meal plan. And what you guys eat, not only in Mcclurg, but also elsewhere on campus, so food in general go for it.
So Swanee has an unlimited dining program, which means that you can come and do a cleric as many times as you want throughout the day and that's excellent. It's almost like an all you can eat style and 70% of the vegetables at Mcclurg is growing on the University farm so you're getting like the highest quality ingredients anywhere. So it's a terrific place to eat, especially if you're vegan or vegetarian. We have those options for you and they're very just very delicious.
Yeah, I am someone who I love a steak **** **** ** love meat. But I absolutely love. The big in mine like it is so good that have the cheesy. Corn grits in the morning favorite favorite thing is on the menu. I can't get enough of it and then if you we have clergy hacks. So the dining halls called Mcclurg. So we all have like little ways to kind of mix it up every now and then so uh good clerk hack is I like to put like strips of bacon in.
The actual grids and like mix it up and so it's like a little surprise. It's almost like spaghetti, but like like breakfast version.
Taylor Baird
06:17:54 PM
Check out the University Farm here: http://farm.sewanee.edu/
My favorite color is the omelette line. We have an amazing on that line, so good like full on Lititz fully stocked anything better than Waffle House. I say so. Much better and free absolutely it's great, yeah, yeah.
Don't let the abberline limits you right, it's not just on list.
You can get any side eggs prepared quesadillas quesadillas wraps sandwiches.
I see, there is a seafood market.
Right you're absolutely right.
Sometimes practices run long an I don't make it to the dining Hall and so I'm trying to stay on our central part of campus. I'll go to our cafe, the library.
And you know typical cafe stuff coffees chocolates teas croissants, but also really good sandwiches really good breakfast foods that tends to be my post practice.
Anna Secor
06:19:22 PM
What is your favorite place to hang out with friends? to study? Any hidden gems on campus?
Natasha Wanjiru
06:19:25 PM
Are there times that the dining hall closes or is it open 24/7?
Sounds like it runs late, yeah, chef Rick is our main Schaeffer Muckler dining and he is awesome. I love Chevron, but he's also really great about getting to know us and if you have an allergy or some sort of dietary restriction. He's really good at talking to people and just shoot him. An email he'll meet with you. He'll figure it out so that you can. Enjoy your food at McClure going to actually get good food, while you're here. He also sends out emails every morning tells you what his.
Thanks for the day are from the clerk few hacks that he thinks will be good and also interesting things about food. He's really good about educating us and teaching us. What's going on and we're totally self run program so chef Rick and the other executive chefs get a lot of diversity and they can choose what they want to put for us. I think about 20% of all of our food is local he mentioned the other day, I was talking to Jeff right that our milk is actually all local it comes from the Murfreesboro Area, Tennessee. I know which is super cool.
Maya Dighe
06:20:10 PM
Any other places to eat in the area? (Off-campus, I mean)
So they have a lot of flexibility there and they also have a Facebook group where you can suggest things and they're really good about responding to what you want and figuring out what you know is going to make us happy and feed us well so yeah, that's awesome. So we are going to transition into Greek life.
We do, we have hold on we have a thought from Kurdistan hold on? Yes, I don't know if you can hear me over here, but I just got 2 questions before we transition away from that someone asked about women dining has it open and then where do you guys eat outside dining also sort of like local options once you go to for the viewers who can hear that question. It was where do you guys eat that's not the dining Hall local options? Where you go and what are the times when the dining Hall is closed the voice was kind of from the corner so go ahead.
7 really 7 and then it closes at 8:00 PM, yeah, and so.
It's good great hours, yeah, my I know if you go over your studying they've got practice late. You can always go to Sterling's back into the cafe that is still on main campus. They have delicious food and that is also on your meal plan plan, you have something called pub box. So we all have 150 pup so they can spend at Sterlings, which is the cafe or in the Library Cafe. We also have a few restaurants in downtown saloni, which is a 5 minute walk or a short drive.
There's a pizza place there's sandwiches a little bakery a pub. You know lots of good food right here on campus. There's also a shift. As of late that a lot of the lot of the independent restaurants have all been shifting to accept our campus currency and so I think it only only one probably that doesn't accept.
So most of them you don't have to worry about outside cash.
Camilla Kalthoff
06:22:29 PM
How much on average does it cost to participate in sororities or fraternities
So don't worry you will be fed here on the mountain. You know you have plenty of food options OK. So now we're going to transition into Greek life. We had a lot of questions come through beforehand about it, so could you. Love you talk about your experience with Greek life on campus and kind of how it works here? I know we have a little bit of a different system than a lot of Greek life. Some of our viewers might have heard of so if any of you want to touch on your own personal experience and kind of house money Greek life works in general.
Yes, so freshman will rush second semester and I really like this, assuming she gives you a chance to get your foot on campus figure out you know where you're going to fit kind of understand what the different organizations are and then you can join second semester. I did not want to join I was very against sororities. The organization all of it, but I made myself go through rush. You know was like I'll just see what happens and I ended up finding a small sorority that I just loved and I really enjoyed the girls, I felt like I fit in really well.
So I joined on a whim, and I love it. I'm now secretary and treasurer or you know, I've mentioned we're going to the aquarium this weekend. I really love all the sister hood events. We have so I would say that there is a niche for almost everyone on campus. And if you know that's not for you. There are also a bunch of people who are keyboard nations and that's the niche in and of itself, yeah, so I actually went through rush. The second semester freshman year like most other people, but then I decided to.
Unjoin my this already that I was in and then I took a semester. Another semester of just being an independent student so I decided to see if I want to Greek life or not because I kind of came in. Not exactly knowing what I wanted and so then I ended up upper class rushing which is a system that allowed people take advantage of and I found my perfect fit because I was exposed to the Greek Eventine. The sisterhoods of each place without going through the rush process so it was very.
Is very comfortable environment and I really got to know them for a full year before I rush? Which is really really nice. And so now I'm nervous worried I love.
Oh, I had a similar story where I also rush second semester. My freshman year and I thought no, I wanted to break from this and come back and see if I want to join a Greek organization. I eventually did and it's been a really interesting experience.
Just trying to be a partner organization on campus is growing in as well. On Top of that, though it's good to mention that I think the incoming this freshman class around 50% rushed so it's really split so either way. Whether you want to be part of Greek life or not.
And could one of you all of you depending on who wants to answer this touch on how much it costs to be in a group organization here on campus.
So uhm I know for sororities. We have 2 national authorities and their fees are a little different than the local authorities. I'm going to Local 1.
Taylor Baird
06:25:34 PM
Our current percentage of students participating the Greek Life is 66%.
I believe our fees are about $300 a year but then we also have scholarship programs so a lot of our girls are on scholarships and don't pay that full fee anyway. So I don't know how but yeah, I think I think ours might be a little more than that. But every there's always a scholarship like opportunity like the inner story. Interesting Story Council. Yes, yeah, they just did a fundraiser with T Shirts, they sold a bunch of T shirts with like a picture of the gates and it all represented our group life system into all of that money that they raised went towards.
Giving people scholarships and so no matter what place you join where you feel comfortable you always have an option to be able to read it?
And like I said it's your organization is willing to work with you to make sure so.
That's awesome, so this is kind of a dual question so kind of a last request question than a transition also so we had a question about Greek life service opportunities. So you mentioned you're going to the crime. That's a bit more of a fun trip, but some service opportunities and then also could you guys talk about office of civic engagement on campus and kind of how you interact with not only slightly students, but the surrounding areas. So kind of dual question there for you so we want to start on that.
Nhu Nguyen Phuc
06:26:34 PM
How do we connect with the local people and the communities around Sewanee?
Taylor Baird
06:26:56 PM
Check out more about Greek Life here: https://new.sewanee.edu/campus-life/connecting/greek-life/
So my friend has one big services in a year is called Swanee cartoon grocery cards and we made baskets and we're Apple imaf. I know it's pretty clear throughout Valentine's Day and we raise a lot of money for a local churches in Mont Eagle for their food bank and further outreach program. And so you know, I said it's our one to give and so we go all out and we raise a ton of money for them. I know a lot of sorties have smaller events throughout the year as well. But.
Yeah, well, I know other stories on campus or in collaboration with the Girl Scouts. So that's really big selling cookie yeah, we always have little Girl Scouts. All across campus and then if my sorority is involved with the monarch, which helps a lot of the children in the local area so sometimes I'll get a text and be like someone from blue modern needs a babysitter and so like we get those kind of opportunities that really connect us with a lot of people in the local community so it's awesome.
Shifting to the larger at ion office estimate the age I was a UH-100 service leader here part of the larger Bonner Service program nationally spent a lot of time in the office and.
There is a lot of service opportunities for the different types of need so I was, I focused a lot on. On on serving the local high schools specifically in in Grundy County and.
That was my focus that's what I I think I I work well with high school age students uh.
But a lot of my a lot of other bonders in Microsoft service class also leave a bunch of different sites. Whether it be with different age kids are there be with with the elderly?
A special needs individuals.
You know in that that expands to the local community, but also right services everywhere. So there is an international component. It currently collaboration with some other departments to expand certain efforts globally.
There is work with our farm with our University farm so have very hands on direct involvement there.
Taylor Baird
06:29:07 PM
We hope that all Sewanee students engage in the greater community during your time on the Mountain. Check out some ways in which you could do that here: https://new.sewanee.edu/campus-life/engaging/
We have, we have the variety and the offices civic engagement does a really good job whether it's you come in like me a part of a scholarship program or you just want to volunteer. You walk in the doors and they're like. Hey, I want to volunteer. My great pic from here and I'm like OK. I can only volunteer on Saturdays and like great pic from these now, so it's really helpful experience. Miles you touched on it. Could you briefly explain explain our Bonner program as well as our canali program just to kind of the differences between those 2 and you came in as a Bonner.
But then also you know, there's 2 different options on campus right so the bottom program is our bonders leaders program is our is our Suwannee specific program that.
Daddy here is still a larger Bonner Foundation so you going in Google that and see what they're about so we hear it. All those core values and and those those scholar expectations of students.
So number of work hours that takes place of Azure work. Studies now Canali's is Swanee boring. So it is an Canali's arrived on campus here before Bonner's did and takes place of a work study opportunity. X amount of hours weekly and you get to experience a couple of different service sites depending on your interests and the expectation is that you move through progression.

06:30:29 PM
Which one is better, FYP or PRE?
Emma Daughtry
06:30:34 PM
Did you do PRE or FYP? What was this experience like?
That you become an eventual site leader and you grow in your own service leadership skills awesome. Thank you. That was wonderful so there were a bunch of questions. When you are registered and I'm seeing some now but the difference between pre an FYI which is kind of funny. We were having our own little debate before we went on screening of 3 versus F IP so could all of you First off describe the 2 programs and what are the differences between the 2:00 and then maybe mentioned? Which one you did, and you can show your own personal affinity, but they're both wonderful programs.
So we have yeah, so they're both really great programs for FYP that stands for find your place. The freshman will come 2 weeks before school starts. You'll get into smaller groups with two upperclassmen who are your mentors and a professor so that's your class and that class, actually continued through the rest of the semester until about Thanksgiving. That's what that classes and a lot of those classes are centered around finding your place. Finding your home, figuring out what the idea of home is.
Um so for this program, you'll live on campus living in a dorm for those 2 weeks. Get your footing figure out Mcclurg. You understand how this campus works before everyone else comes in at the beginning of classes pre is the pre orientation program that is 3 days long, so 3 days before classes start you come in you'll be assigned to family. So you'll also have 2 mentors and they are.
Organized by the Swanee outing program so as a lot of outdoors activities will be hiking and climbing kayaking. Canoeing all of that super fun stuff and it's really just like overload here is everything you could do on this campus. Let's get really excited for freshman year and so my older brother graduated last year and he ran free for one year and he loved it, it was a blast really great program on my friends did that one as well. I did do FYP.
I was also in FIP mentor this past year, but they're both super great programs.
Yeah, I'd say, you describe it in the best way.
I was also hoping mentor. We were both mentors for this past year and I think as a freshman when I came in. It was exactly what I needed and so you go ahead and move in with your roommate. You got to know that for those 2 weeks and you're both going through the program at the same time, so you're going to get paired with someone who's doing FP or someone who's doing pre for what I know. And so that was just so nice to go ahead and move in go ahead and get settled before I'd say like 80% of the campus gets here it is not a very.
Large percentage of people do the programs and so I think it was not only one of them is like important and reassuring things that I've ever done like really over freshman year but it was also really transformative like I talked to a professor this morning about my FYI class because of the ratings that we did during FP relate to my now sophomore year. Literature class and so those kind of connections. And those kinds of impacts. They had on my swimming career is so insane. Yeah.
So I did FYP my freshman year and.
Taylor Baird
06:33:56 PM
FYP will be Aug. 12-21, 2020 and PRE will be Aug. 19-21, 2020.
I I absolutely loved it was one of the best experiences. I had its money. One thing that I really appreciated about it is, you actually receive course credit for your time and that's why peas so by the end of those few weeks. You've already completed a course and then after this, 3 weeks. Instead of taking the to pull 4 courses. You'll take in a semester. You take 3. So you really get to focus all your effort into a pipe course, which teaches you about Swanee and then you have a little bit more free time to work on those other.
3 courses so it's really set me up for success as 1.
That's also my one thing I will mention about pre is that you do sleep outside just be where you know they're considering that you will have to camp so it's really fun. Football field is that right. I think you camp around different locations on campus, so depending on your group.
I came in as a soccer player and that's OK.
Yeah, yeah, all sports brother also couldn't do either 1 because he was inspired to be lunch being up there and getting yes fall athletes. You'll be loving your pre orientation of preseason, which is almost as fun.
So one last question for you all and then we're going to switch over to the Q&A. Thank you all people who are viewing for sending in your great questions. But on the last question. I'm going to turn over 2. Guys is could you talk about the SOP and for those who are listening who don't know what that is that is the Swanee outing program so anyone talk about your experience or just kind of in general about the SOP on campus and kind of how it operates and what they do, I'll start I'm really brief?
Taylor Baird
06:35:23 PM
Registration for both of those programs is set to open on April 15th. Students who have paid their enrollment deposit will be able to register!
Maya Dighe
06:35:30 PM
Can you talk more about the Sewanee outing program?
Ainsleigh Campbell
06:35:35 PM
What have been your experiences with the Sewanee Outing Program?
I I haven't participated in 2 and too many esapi programs. A lot of that is just sports conflicts. But I did take a couple of service trips and I needed I needed a a sleeping bag and ground pad and they had camping equipment for me to just check out. I just needed to return it like it was a library group let like it was library book so that's my experience really available a great resource for actual items. Yeah, I love the Esso pee like miles. I haven't been able to go on as many as I would like to.
Benghazzi Acquah
06:35:51 PM
Hey y'all,I'm Benjamin from Ghana.
But I did go camping with them for a few times an I had never thought I would like caving and I had a blast, it was so much fun and like miles mentioned it's all free all of these trips with leaders so I would highly encourage anyone who's even remotely interested in the outdoors to at least wanna hike or you know go. Canoeing go somewhere. They have tons of events tons of different programs and they're all such a fun time, yeah, so a lot of my fellow residents of the greenhouse, or actually.
Heavily involved in the SMP and so a lot of them have been leaders for certain trips so like I think last weekend, some of my neighbors let a hike.
On one of our parts of the trail, and so like I see them go out and I sometimes don't go in there, sometimes just like napping in bed, but I have also gone caving that was part of FIP.
And so and I also have done a sleeping bag borrow because of group of my friends actually doing freshman year. We just decided to go camping together and that was really fun until we have those resources because Mississippi.
Yeah, at Swanee are we have 13,000 acres here in the domain so this money. How do you program is really here to help you just kind of explore all that money has to offer so anything you need swimming program really acid and Julia mentioned. The P trail that is the perimeter trail so uh no it's OK.
Brianna Howell
06:37:34 PM
How hard is it to balance an academic and social life simultaneously ?
So on campus, we have over 55 miles of trails just on our campus and the perimeter trail is about 24 miles that loops all the way around and so, if you're feeling really ambitious as a visitor you're welcome to try and hike. Some of that trail and so the next question, we're going to do is from one of our viewers and so we have a question asking is it hard to balance an academic and social life simultaneously. You're all doing it successfully you're here, so could you tell us some tips for doing that and kind of how you balance?
All the things you do I funny.
I would say it's not easy, uh, but it's doable and I love everything I'm in so I can't imagine dropping anything.
Since I enjoy everything and I'm dedicated to my studies. I make it work. So you figure out how to stay in the things you want to and also do well in school because you have to.
And everyone like you mentioned we're all doing it. So everyone understands. I remember freshman year. I had an 8:00 AM on Friday morning. and I was like look guys. I can't do anything Thursday night. I just and all my friends understood you know they were like OK, you go do your homework. That's OK. We understand so I say we were very supportive of each other and trying to do everything yeah.
My friends are always making sure I'm doing my homework.
Erin Readling
06:38:58 PM
Do students really dress up for class? What is the general campus vibe?
If if they know I have a test tomorrow. They will be in the library with me and just like making sure that do my homework. So it's for me. It's not either or it's like you know doing both sometimes. Yeah, my remain. I'll sometimes lock ourselves in the room and do homework together to make sure that we're both doing our homework. And then we'll both go to like the same kind of activity afterwards, but I think it is very important to have a group of people around you. That ground you and I think that comes with a lot of your social activities as well.
And so having those people that keep you.
I think the lesson I learned was you know, balancing does it mean equal effort given or equal time give it right so be very aware. I'm going on? Which you need to be successful as a student because each of us do not need the same things here.
And that's really, and that's really key because biggest shift from high school to college is Congrats here in college now at Max. You'll have 3 hours worth of classes and in a day.
You have 21 hours now to do with what are you gonna do with it?
Yeah, it's time management, you get really good at it really quickly, yeah.
Our uh our next question coming in is just students really dress up for class slash? What is class stress and adding that for you as a question so you guys could talk about that and then? What is the general campus 5. I'm going to interpret this questionnaire and as both clothing wise and people wise so hipster answer both of those if you would.
Uh so class dress if you don't know is a tradition of it. Swanee, where students will traditionally dress up for their classes. So my parents also went to Swanee back in the 80s and when they were here. It meant guys were jackets and ties and khakis, girls often wear dresses skirts. You would not wear jeans to class then now it has definitely loose and I will wear jeans to class but I'll have a nice sweater on I'll brush my hair put in earrings.
Make an effort I think it also depends on which building your classes are in if that sounds kind of weird, but it's true. Gaylor are English and language arts or foreign languages building. I have found it to be more strict on class dress. the English professors armor set in their traditional ways. And they expect you to look nice. And they'll usually wear their gowns a sign of respect. But for my Snowden classes, which are more outdoor labs and the fisheries class where we're standing in streams looking at fish is.
You would not wear nice clothes to that, so I think it depends on the professor and also your vibe how you are feeling towards you know that class, and how you want to portray yourself in it. I think a lot of it, too, has to do with kind of your own creativity. I think we talked a lot about it during FYP.
There was one big lecture that one of the arts professors put on about class dress in about how that is kind of your opportunity to say This Is This is who I am like I'm sharing my creativity through my clothes, so like I wear this outfit to a class like a psych class this afternoon. and I feel like it accurately portrays who I am my vibe. My creativity and I think that also comes into play, but also still being very respectful.
Right yeah, you put in an effort and you respect the professor enough to not be in sweatpants. Just rolled out of bed exactly so exactly let Charlotte on a cultural bit there. There's the clothes do you wear to class and then there's class dress right?
That's what it is that's the cultural difference, so when someone says class dress.
Taylor Baird
06:42:37 PM
Thanks for submitting questions, we will approve them on the screen as we tackle them!
Um they really refer to the traditional for guys. It's coat and tie right and you will do that at certain events. There are certain lengthy honor code signing love mentioned earlier. The expectation is that class dress tradition of coat and tie forever. For guys at the very least and then then what that female equivalent is.
Ainsleigh Campbell
06:43:10 PM
What is your favorite student activity that you've attended?
For Maine class dress just means you know look nice. You know spending as a whole variety of different cultures here on campus and that changes for very many different cultures. So I guess as long as you're kind of dressing as your best self then you'll be fine.
I I walk outside and I see other people. I mean, it's community. It's so it's so heavily built on community and I. I don't think I could exaggerate that enough like you have to come here understand it as you walk out of your room for the first time in the morning. You see someone passed down the Hall and you. You remember that, you're a part of this bigger community. It's it's togetherness. It's people lookout for each other. It's that's the part of it being so small. I think that's that's the pod.
That's that's perfect answer for the Vine.
So our next question is what is your favorite student activity that you have attended it doesn't necessarily have to be something you're actively a participant in but even just you know random thing you showed up too. And that you really, really love to so anything that has kind of been like that was awesome tell us more.
My favorite activity is uhm.
Chinese lunar New Year Mcclurg goes all out pulls out all the stops for it. They decorate the clerk to have all of these traditional foods. It is so much fun. I missed it this year. I'm so upset about it just have to wait till next year and the whole community comes together. All the professors come. They bring their children community members come and it's really a fun event that we have community members of the one who come they come in with the dancing dragon yet.
My favorite thing is something that I'm involved in but it's something that a lot of perspective. Students come to as well. But the Greenhouse puts on Armentrout and leggings and then so arm and Trout Lagan salmon.
The House, the Greenhouse is the armantrout yesterday. Alan's name. So yeah, yeah. That's where it came from, but instead open mic and we actually recently been putting it on in a professor's house and so he's invited us in and allow us to have that space and show that space with all a bunch of professors also participate in it, like a doctor. Kean say his love songs from his wife. They were so nerdy so cute, but open mic for comedy for music for everything.
And I think that's a big part of the community.
My favorite activity or event at Swanee has been spawning monologues in the next. One is actually going to be coming up this Monday. I think or February 24th and what that is, is Swanee students. You know, putting forward like pieces of writing going up on stage and just sharing stories experiences. They have it's a really intimate event and it really kind of highlights. When is my strength? Which is just this writing all the students from many different program tend to be really great writers and share really good storms.

What is the schedule of a typical day on campus?
Connie Tapia
06:46:18 PM
Work-Study jobs?
One an I forget the name but you try a whole bunch of different noodles with various spaces, yeah, yeah, it's ribs, spicy noodles.
Try different noodles the other is.
Reset the XL started the Extreme Football League and so we've been in our daily auditorium watching XL on Sunday. Evenings just having a good old time with the new Football League trying to get hype about it, trying to best.

06:47:17 PM
how are work-study programs decided
I want to come to all of those activities so you know, let me know when they're when they're happening next so the next the next kind of combo question. We're going to tackle here is what is a typical day like on campus so tell me what you did. Today, that will work and then also could you guys talk about your work study positions if any of you have them and the work study process on campus so kind of tie. Those in together. Hopefully one if you went to work study job today, so it will fit right in.
Um my Wednesdays are very busy us while walking through the whole thing up my first class is chemistry at 9:00 AM. So I get to Mcclurg at 8:30 to get breakfast. I have my one group of friends that I sit with me every Monday. Wednesday Friday for breakfast, with omelette. Oh yes, omelets and they've got great biscuits at Mcclurg and then I have an hour break and then I have biology at 11:00 AM and then on Wednesdays. We have Italian table. So we go up to the balcony of Mcclurg. We meet with both our time professors.
And when you try to speak in Italian for a whole hour over lunch. Um it's very difficult very fun very rewarding and then I have Italian class at 2:00 PM and then a horseback riding lesson at 4, so that kind of rounds out my whole day and then I'm usually done around 6:00.
Yeah, it's a tactic you also have to give us your entire itineraries. If you don't want to welcome too. But you know you can just you can add on or continue in the work study whatever works best.
Generally, for a typical day for Maine. Ihave all ATMs a semester, which I thought would be hard. But as long as as long as you're consistent with your schedule would be fine. So I'll have my classes in the morning. I'll go to Mcclurg. After that, I might go to my dorm room answer emails do some homework get lunch? Do some more homework. Fowler get dinner. Maybe go to the meeting with some organization. I'm apart of and then.
Go to bed they have some free time before and Fowler is the athletic center just for everyone had like something yes.
I have my work city tomorrow, it did not have it today. But there's these are my work study day so I like I said, I was. I'm a dancing Peter fellow which means that I get scholarship for participating in both the dance and theater programs. So my big contribution and like working with the theater program is my work study so I've actually a Carpenter.
I know flight flex. I'm a Carpenter in theater Department so I help out in the shop. I've learned how to use all the power tools. It's terrifying but I have some of the best mentors and they absolutely. Show me how to work. Everything in the most safe way possible so like right now, we're about to start working on the Ted X stage so Ted X is coming here if you've all watched like Ted talks on YouTube. I know I have been to them a couple times, but one will be here at Swanee so I will be helping build that stage.

What is your favorite club you've ever joined on campus
Akani Bey
06:50:11 PM
Are there any multi cultural clubs?
So if you see it that's that's the same but also right now. I'm like I'm organizing one of the lighting rooms, so like there's so much stuff that it only we organize us. This my job. But I get paid for it. And that's the coolest thing ever because I get to contribute to all the people who have contributed to my life here point.
Bob Makazhu
06:50:21 PM
Do you have Christian groups or clubs on campus?Briefly share about them?
Looking ahead, I went to, I went to my work Saturday. I work in the French Department so doing odds and ends for professors at that's homework help in its homework help. It is what it is.
I have morning classes well.
Oh, I killed you at a local school right down the road from us and so around 3:00 o'clock. I leave to go. Coach won their on their track and field team. Middle schoolers and high schoolers solely for that, so fun. I'm just an admissions rate related note for our viewers work study is federal money that you get an it's based on your need based aid and so when you're all filling out those lovely forms of facts and the CSS S profile works. It is going to be built into part of your loan package and there are also available jobs on campus for those who do not qualify for work study.
Still, able to work on campus. If you want to even if you don't have a work study job through your financial aid package just from that, from that standpoint.
Natasha Wanjiru
06:51:24 PM
I love working in Tech in the theater. So glad to know that that's a work-study option!
Yeah, so I don't have a work study, but I'm trying to be a Center for speaking and listening tutor. So when I complete that course then next year. I'll be able to be a tutor and I'll get paid for that job, too.
Wonderful OK, so another dual question for you were trying to combine question viewers to get to the mall. So this is going to be? What is your favorite club that you're on the is on campus whether you're part of it or heard of it and then also could you touch on religious life a little bit in general and kind of how that operates and maybe it all seems just how that works.
Brianna Howell
06:51:59 PM
When is the TEDx talk?
I'll start one club that in organizational apart up is called peer health educators and bring the process of really comment. That this this semester? What that is, it's taking students who are interested in health and Wellness.
And using you know research and studies to put together workshops and programs respond students in hosted events, so we're really looking after the students at Swanee.
And just you know, making small anymore, it kinda healthy able community.
You wanna talk about female sure so we're both in something called perpetual. It is a student LED dance performance. So I mentioned I'm copresident swing dancing club so we have a dance this year that I'm helping choreograph and it is the most fun thing I probably am involved on campus every group, I mean, we have tons of different dances. I was in a tap dance last year in the swing dance, one, but we have.
I mean, I don't know modern dance ballet.
Or something like the more we start with some clubs that step by step club had a dance last year and.
Oh, there was an Arizona Oh, the flight of the time yes.
So it's a really cool event that these students work on all year. We've been rehearsing since first semester and send a few weeks about one will have our big performance and on the whole community will come out and watch and it's it's really but it's a big deal, yeah, yeah.
Yet late April, the 16th the 16th and 17th at weekend this year and last year. It lined up with the previous one year. It does as well this year, too, so if you're coming for preview or perspective. You can go see pimo the night before. Yeah, conveniently planned that way. Yes.
Taylor Baird
06:53:46 PM
Brianna, TEDxUniversityoftheSouth will be March 28th. It's our first year and we're already sold out! Hopefully we'll be able to share clips of the speakers.
Anyone else have a favorite club and then also could one of you touch on religious life.
So also in my day I met with one of my spiritual values. I am a Christian and that is something that is that is welcomed in foster here 'cause the religious history of this school.
And it's really interesting for the meeting, I had was an interfaith meeting. So we had yeah. I don't. I don't really plan. The meeting to anything any yeah, it wasn't interface, meaning and so.
Ellie Friedman
06:54:30 PM
I've heard about the blue light system that other colleges have on campus, but I know Sewanee does it different. Do you feel safe with the security system on campus? Does this size make you feel safe?
And in a Muslim student was there and it was just a get together to discuss programming opportunities and pull before it in the in the University.
So religious life is Christian dominated but that that's just a matter of of the applicant pool. It's not nothing to speak towards towards culture. Yeah, we have tons of other religious definitely it should say on campus in organizations and one of our theme houses the Interfaith House. Yeah, I would say most of the opportunities is our through all sites since that's so local right here on campus. But I have lots of friends, who also go to religious organizations off campus as well.
But here all things um my freshman year I was a acolyte and a chalice bear so I got pretty involved in that and I loved it, it's a really fun community. We have a group of students called the sacristans and you have to apply to get into this group. They joke that it's like a Greek organization rush sacristans. They have so much fun and they pretty much help with the entire service at All Saints. And so they learn a lot about the church and how it works, and also the bureaucracy of the church all across the country.
Um and they they have a blast. They really enjoy it. So you can get totally involved. If you want to or you don't have to be involved at all or you can be involved in things off campus totally different things you know, whatever you want to.
What day is that I always like to mention is that all since Chapel is open 24/7 so if it's finals week and you really stressed out and you need a quiet place you go just use your mind all since this toy walking through them.
Yeah, great, so we do have uh about 2 more questions that we have time for so good one if you really quickly, touch on the safety of campus. So it was specifically asked about the blue light system that sometimes exists on campuses and you know if you could touch on funny safety and how you feel safe here.
Move different events going on during the weekends with great organizations and just different organizations. But one of the things that separates us from other schools as we focus very heavily on safety. We have different services on campus. We have entire Police Department right here at Swanee with I think around like 26 or 36 police officers who know note with the students know on a first name basis. We have boxes which is a student run driving service, which can.
Experience up at different locations at Swanee and drop them off wherever they need to go so there's a lot of really different.
Areas that are taken care of Swanee here, yeah, so are blue eyed system. We have 2 blue lights on campus and that's not a lot compared to other campuses. But I think that's compensated for like you said up in the high 20s of the amount of police officers. We have here on campus. You can always say. Please officers truck driving around their trucks are big and noticeable but they are there their child. View and they are there to look out for you and I feel like I feel like that's our blue light system is real people, you don't have to wait for a call or.

Or something like that, we also have a really cool application on your Phone called lip safe. So when freshman come in first day orientation before classes, even start every freshman will download the live safe app. In this app. Let's you get in contact with the police officers. Even with domain management. If there's a tree down if you feel unsafe. In any way you can contact someone. It also has a really cool feature that's a virtual walk home so if you're.

Diversity at Sewanee? Are there events or workshops to help international students make friends and connect?
Studying in the library and it's 2:00 AM and you don't really want to walk all the way across campus when it's really dark or you know you know feel very safe. You can have a friend who's you know in their dorm or even somewhere else not on campus. They can virtually walk. You home and if you don't get your location in the certain amount of time they can call for help for you so it kind of gives you a little extra feeling with like OK. Someone's got my back. It'll be alright. I mean, I know I've never felt unsafe on this campus were pretty close community.
We got lots of lights around campus and also it's not very far walk. You know, I don't have to go really far across campus walking by myself so I've never felt that much of a danger so.

Would you choose sewanee again if you were about going to college again.
OK so we have time for one last question. I do want to preface this by saying that I'm sorry to everyone who's question, we didn't get to. I'm going to type my email in after after the students answered this so you can email me and I can pass your questions along to our panelists or I can answer them, so thank you. All for tuning. In that you to all of you for showing up and being panelists. So our last question, which is a really fun. One is would you choose Swanee again if you had to do it all over again like would you go back and do it again?
Hopefully the answer is yes.
It would be a much easier decision this time I really stressed about my decision. I was on the fence. I really wasn't sure everyone else knew I was coming to Swanee. They were like half in South stressing you're going there. It'll be fine. But I was really torn and distraught and I finally chose it on like the last day possible. An I have never been happier with the decision that I've made. I know that if I was doing it. Again, I would immediately say yes to coming to Swanee. I mean, I would apply early decision 'cause I know I.
This is just a place for me, I just know it now.

Not sure we'll get to cover your question, Ahmad. Check out this page to explore inclusion in a lot of forms here at Sewanee. https://new.sewanee.edu/campus-life/including/
Hum for me, absolutely if I had to say anything to the High School graduate version of Maine. I would just say just relax have fun you know college is really intimidating place to enter but this one is really looking out for its students and making sure they have a great experience when it comes to the classes. My comes to social life. So if I had to say anything to Microsoft would be relax have fun enjoy it.
Yeah, I think I definitely would agree. I think my decision was heavily influenced by the fact that my brother went here and so I was like he had a great time overtime, but now that I'm here and I understand my own path that I have made for myself. Understanding that I've had these amazing opportunities, I'm a Carpenter.
So I mean, just little quirky things like that makes money so special, and I think if I were to look at it more in depth. I think the answer would still absolutely be yes, but for different different right reasons.
Never ask this question for nominal questions keep it up wow. I would say yes and I would say yes to 2 versions of question. Yes, what I might go back and started a little break in you know it as is and then.
