Henry Cleland, C'17
Sewanee is truly an incredible place and it has done so much for me. I have grown as a leader being involved in residential life as an assistant proctor and later a proctor of two different dorms here on campus. As a proctor I have planned many fun and engaging events for my residents, as well as made sure all of them are safe and having a positive Sewanee experience. Next, in the admissions office I have learned the skills of public speaking giving tours and lunch hosting prospective students. Also, my freshman year I learned the rewards of hard work and patience as a swimmer, ultimately dropping over two minutes on my mile time and winning most improved man. Then after rushing I found friendship, fun, and comradery in my fraternity. Similarly, inside the classroom as a history major and politics minor I have learned how to critically read, write, think, and analyze a variety of sources. My professors know and care about me and feel personally invested in my success, helping me in any way they can and challenging me everyday. Finally, Sewanee has assisted enormously in my preparation for the future--I want to go to law school and be a lawyer. With the help of a fantastic Career and Leadership Development Office and a surprisingly vast alumni network, I have interned in the chambers of a federal district court judge in Frankfort, Kentucky for one summer, and the Office of the Public Defender of Baltimore another. It is the combination of all these opportunities with a beautiful campus and loving and close community that makes Sewanee unique.
